The Spurs have not made big changes on their roster but Gregg Popovich will make sure they are not the same team as last season.

The Spurs have always had a duality to them. They are traditional but innovative, predictable in some ways but not in others. "The same old Spurs" description so many throw at them is apt in that you can count on them to be consistently good, to play disciplined basketball, and to be coy with the press. But over the years their style of play has changed dramatically and, while their core remains the same, the rest of the roster has undergone significant changes.

That tension between continuity and evolution will be strong this season. The Spurs won the title in decisive fashion. There were two close series but the struggles against the Mavs seemed a product of fluky events and a perhaps overconfident team not showing the "appropriate fear" and what most people forget about the Thunder series is that Ibaka wasn't the only injured star. In fact Tony Parker was hobbled for most of the season, including the playoffs. Yet the Spurs finished with the top record in the league, came out of the West and demolished the Heat in the Finals, playing some of the best basketball anyone has seen in years.

So obviously the temptation is high to avoid fixing what's not broken.

That explains why the team brought everyone back, something no championship team has done since the Chicago Bulls in 1991. Here's how Pop explained the decision: "Uh … well … we had a pretty good year so … I didn't see any reason to kick them out of town or make trades or changes. Plus most of them were under contract, and that makes it more difficult. It's a pretty good crew and they'll all come back and as usual they'll do their best and we'll either lose in the first round, second round, conference finals or win it all, who knows?"

The phrase "a pretty good year" is the current front-runner for Understatement of the Year. Pop is obviously being careful not to succumb to hubris, but he and the rest of the league knows that if the Spurs can play as they did last season, they are the team to beat, the favorites. The Spurs didn't need a complete overhaul like the Cavs' underwent — or even the rotation tweaks of the Clippers and Thunder — because they know how good they can be with what they have. Staying the course was obviously an easy decision.

That's why it was a little strange to read what Pop told the media as transcribed in this must-read Washington Post piece by Michael Lee: "You got to keep up with it, because teams change, players' careers change and the makeup of the team changes. Standing pat never works." That mantra largely contradicts what the franchise did this off-season. The makeup of the team hasn't changed at all and the only real change I can envision happening from day one will be come because Patty Mills is recovering from rotator cuff surgery. If standing pat never works then why have the Spurs gone with the most extreme example of continuity in years while their opponents have made significant changes?

That apparent contradiction disappears when we understand the quote in the context Pop provided it: standing pat is a mindset, not anything quantifiable like roster changes.

Everybody knows complacency (and health, of course) could be as big a threat to a Spurs repeat as OKC or Cleveland.  "They are human beings. They are going to feel satisfied," said Pop, and I can't help to think that he's talking about himself as well. Everyone, including – or especially – Pop need new challenges or else they are susceptible to contentment, to resting on their laurels. And even in a season in which he could simply be on cruise control after building and keeping together a team that plays exactly the way he taught them to, he will find those challenges.

The Spurs have made two big additions this summer: Becky Hammon and Ettore Messina. Hammon is pioneer but also a rookie coach in need of a mentor. And Messina is a seasoned veteran of the sidelines and, according to Pop, is bringing innovation to the playbook already: "In our preparation for the season he's seen the way we do things and we do this and we do that and he's said ‘Have you thought about this?' and I already like some of the suggestions that he's made that we'll change." Pop has never been shy about adding plays or changing philosophies and having new eyes looking at the way things are run could result in subtle but meaningful tweaks. Does the team need that? Probably not. But if you can get better there's no reason not to try to.

To the casual observer, the Spurs will look the same next season. With any luck they will also have similar success. But the faithful have seen just how much experimentation was necessary to achieve this identity the Spurs now have and, knowing the architect behind it, will expect even more. Even if it's still probably not necessary to start featuring Kawhi Leonard in the offense more prominently yet, Pop will try to find ways. He will continue to try to untangle the riddle within an enigma that isBoris Diaw instead of settling for the glimpse he got last season. And he will even try to figure out just how good the deep bench guys can be, even though they will not sniff the court in the post-season and won't be Spurs next year. Failing to do so would be standing pat and we already know how Pop feels about that.

This upcoming season the entire roster will be the same. The same coach will roam the sidelines as the same owner and general manager watch from the stands. We'll see the same defensive schemes and largely the same offensive plays. The Spurs will continue to have an identity as an unselfish team that moves the ball with precision and, provided there's no great injury, even the minutes distribution come playoffs time will be similar. But to interpret that as the Spurs being the same will be a mistake. The franchise, with Pop as its engine, is always in flux, always in motion even if it takes a more nuanced observation to see the wheels turning than it does on teams that constantly change names on and off the court.

"I WANT YOU BACK NEXT YEAR"

Hawks forward DeMarre Carroll sat out Monday's exhibition win over the Pelicans with a right ankle injury.

Rookie Adreian Payne scored four points in his exhibition debut.

. If a team’s starting five was always made up of its best five players, there would be little to debate. Creating the optimal starting five (and by extension the optimal rotation) isn’t that simple though, and there are several reasons as to why starting Thompson at center could make sense for the Cavaliers. As Cavaliers General Manager has stated more times than one can count, fit is an extremely important part of building a successful basketball team. It’s also one of the reasons why Tristan Thompson may be the better fit at center. First of all, Thompson is nowhere near the passer that Varejao is, and he also doesn’t have Andy’s handle. Because of this, it would likely benefit him to play most of his minutes with the rest of the starting lineup, all of whom are above average passers and shot creators, especially considering Thompson’s struggles with creating good shots for himself. There is also an old saying about passing being contagious and that may be true for the Cavaliers in general and Thompson in particular. After averaging an acceptable 1.3 assists per game in his second year, Thompson slipped to just 0.9 assists per game last season. This may have been due to a change in his own approach or former coach Mike Brown’s offensive schemes, but it’s fairly easy to see Thompson’s assist totals climbing again in David Blatt’s offense, which places a heavy emphasis on ball movement.Another advantage is Tristan Thompson’s strength of scoring in transition. This is the one area of his game that is truly stronger than Varejao’s. According to Synergy Sports, Thompson ranked in the 87th percentile of the league (32nd overall to be exact) on scoring in transition plays last season, making 66.7 percent of his shot attempts in transition. It is often mentioned how Kevin Love’s terrific outlet passes will help James, Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters in transition, but don’t forget about Thompson. His skill in transition combined with the fact that he is simply faster than most other centers will give him a chance to get a couple of easy baskets every game. While Varejao is a solid transition player as well, he simply cannot match Thompson’s speed and explosiveness at this point in his career. Thompson is also far more durable than Varejao, having played in every game over the last two years. Making him the starting center may also help the continuity of this lineup, as he is fairly likely to be available for every game. The final advantage to starting Tristan Thompson may be on the defensive end. While there is no doubt that Varejao is a better defender and was a bit better at protecting the rim last year, Thompson has shown more potential as a shot-blocker. Thompson was a terrific shot-blocker in college, averaging 2.4 blocks per game during his lone season at Texas. Typically blocks, along with rebounds and steals, is a statistic that translates well from college to the NBA, but in Thompson’s case that hasn’t happened. After averaging a solid 1.6 blocks per 36 minutes during his rookie year, Thompson’s averages over the same time have dropped to 1.0 and then 0.5 over the last two years. While this could have been due to added muscle sapping his athleticism somewhat or the defensive schemes of his coaches, the more likely answer is the position Thompson has played. During his rookie year Thompson originally came off the bench behind fellow power forward Antawn Jamison. However, a season-ending injury to Anderson Varejao, and ineffective play by backup centers Samardo Samuels and Ryan Hollins, forced Thompson to become the starting center for the latter part of the season. Because of this he was usually playing close to the basket on defense. While he has played some center over the past two years, Thompson has spent the vast majority of his time at power forward and has typically had to play a bit farther from the basket on defense due to the amount of stretch fours seen in today’s NBA. Thompson is already a solid pick-and-roll defender, and playing the majority of his time at center may allow him to regain his shot-blocking form and become the rim protector many thought he could be coming out of college. When you also take into account the muscle he added this offseason, and the fact that his 7’1” wingspan and 9’0” standing reach help negate his relative lack of height at 6’9”, the case could be made that Tristan Thompson will be more effective as an undersized center than he ever would be as a power forward in today’s NBA.
There are also several advantages to having Varejao come off the bench. The most obvious one would be in helping to manage his minutes. While this can be done whether he starts or comes off the bench, David Blatt may be more comfortable creating a plan for this without having to specifically designate minutes for Varejao at the beginning of each half. Another plus would be the passing Varejao would bring to the second unit. The bench players likely to be in the rotation besides Varejao or Thompson are Shawn Marion, Mike Miller, Matthew Dellavedova and (in certain scenarios) Brendan Haywood. While these are all high I.Q. players, none of them besides Dellavedova are known for their passing. Meanwhile Varejao had the third highest assist ratio for centers in the league last season. This isn’t hockey, and it’s unlikely they will all be on the floor together at once, but having a member of the bench who can help with ball movement when the starters are out is critical. Finally, coming off the bench may allow Varejao to play a bit more power forward after primarily manning the center position for the last few years. While he is better at center on both ends of the floor, a little less banging down low may also help to keep him healthy.

Remember, it isn’t who starts a game that really matters, it’s who finishes it, and Anderson Varejao will likely finish many games for the Cavaliers this season whether or not he is a starter. Meanwhile, Tristan Thompson may never become a star, but he is a solid player and a durable big man who brings terrific energy and rebounding every game. His character and devotion to the team make him the kind of player and person you cannot help but root for. In the right situation he could play a key role for the Cleveland Cavaliers both this season and for years to come.

So Curry on Tuesday drew the Chris Paul assignment that Mark Jackson used to gave to Klay Thompson. It did not go well for Curry, who fouled out in 18 minutes.

"First of all, we didn't care," Kerr said. "We were only planning on playing him 20 minutes anyway. We would have taken him out a lot earlier, when he had the foul trouble. Secondly, we kept him on Chris Paul the whole time, which we wanted to do just to get a look at it."

Part of Jackson's logic for shielding Curry from potent offensive players was to keep him on the floor, rightfully believing the Warriors would suffer greatly with their All-Star bound to the bench with foul trouble.

But Curry wants the challenge. And Kerr believes the Warriors are deep enough, and will have enough variation in their offense, to at least attempt the experiment.

[RELATED: Warriors Outlook: Curry looks to thrive in Kerr's offense]

SUBS AWAY
Kerr's predecessor, Mark Jackson, tended to substitute in units. The new coach ran players in and out at a dizzying rate that surely will make it tougher on opponents.

Then again, his goal on Tuesday was to play a lot of people. He played 14 men.

There was Curry, sharing the floor with four reserves. There was Andre Iguodala, sharing the floor with four reserves. There was the starting lineup back on the floor, with one exception: Draymond Green for David Lee.

Don't be surprised if Kerr mixes and matches his rotations. Indeed, expect it.

NEWS OF THE MORNING

Cuban offers up cautions about ending max deals | Harden to one day help recruit Durant? | Monroe starts preseason in reserve role | Pacers hoping for more aggressive Hill

No. 1: Cuban: Ending max deals creates new issue — Now that the NBA has secured its new media-rights deals, superstars LeBron James and Kevin Durant are among the players to chime in on how said deal will affect future Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations. Those two basically share the mindset that the new media-rights deal means the current CBA should be torn up, with Durant going as far as to say max deals shouldn’t exist anymore. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban explained before last night’s Rockets-Mavs game how making such a move could have far-reaching repercussions, writes ourJeff Caplan:

“If you give up guarantees,” Cuban said. “It’s a trade-off.”

Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant suggested there should no longer be a restriction on how much the league’s top talent can earn because those players generate significant revenue and can’t be paid what they’re worth under the current collective bargaining agreement.

Durant, who can become a free agent in 2016, made the suggestion to do away with max deals in the wake of the NBA announcing a nine-year TV and digital rights extension that the New York Times reported is worth $2.66 billion annually.

Cuban said owners discussed doing away with max contracts during labor negotiations in 2011 and would be willing to do so again, but players would have to be willing to give up fully guaranteed contracts. When an NBA player signs their contract, he is guaranteed the full amount even if he is eventually cut by the team or injured.

Doing away with guaranteed contracts would move the NBA to more of an NFL model where guaranteed money is only a portion of the total stated value of the contract.

“It was discussed during the lockout time among owners, but never got anywhere. So it was just one of those trial balloons,” Cuban said. “I’m not offering this as a negotiation, I’m not suggesting it, all I’m saying is that was something we discussed before, and max contracts are always big question, guarantees are always a big question. But we have two years before that’s even an issue, so no point discussing it now.”

Durant, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant have been quick to point to the new TV deal, plus unprecedented sale prices of several franchises including the Los Angeles Clippers for $2 billion, as further evidence that team owners can no longer claim they’re losing money.

During the last negotiations, the league said 22 of the 30 teams were operating at a loss. The players eventually agreed to a CBA in which their take of the league’s annual basketball-related income (BRI) was cut from 57 percent to 50 percent.

Cuban, however, essentially told the players to slow down.

“It’ll be the first time our TV money comes in above our ticket revenue,” Cuban said of the new deal. “It’s a lot of money, don’t get me wrong, and I’m grateful, but it’s not going to create so much incremental revenue after you pay out the percentages to the players that it’s going to be a shocking windfall. It’ll be good, but not shocking.”

The new TV deal virtually triples the $930 million per year the league takes in from its current TV deal. It takes effect for the 2016-17 season, and the salary cap is expected to rise with it to unprecedented levels, which will also raise player salaries across the board.

“Our net effect of impact per team is significant, but it’s not like, ‘Oh my gosh, we’re just going to be making $50 million apiece,” Cuban said. “We haven’t gotten NFL money.”

No. 2: Rockets hope Harden can one day help recruit Durant to Houston — If you were wondering exactly how the Houston Rockets lost out on keeping (or how the Dallas Mavericks ended up signing) Chandler Parsons, ESPN.com’s Marc Stein has the story for you. In his must-read, detailed account, Stein spells out both sides of the offseason in Texas and digs into why Parsons switched teams. Deep in that story, too, is an interesting nugget about how Houston GM Daryl Morey will likely use his current superstar,James Harden, to try and pitch playing for the Rockets to OKC superstar (and ex-Harden teammate) Kevin Durant:

The Rockets are widely expected to take a step back this season, thanks to all the depth they squandered on the Bosh dice roll, but they expect to have significant salary-cap room next summer — when they can chase point guards as accomplished as Goran Dragic and Rajon Rondo if they choose — as well as in the summer of 2016.

Which is when, sources say, they’d like to give Harden an opportunity to serve as Houston’s lead recruiter in the pursuit of a free agent named Kevin Wayne Durant.

Morey is naturally unwilling (and not allowed by league rules) to discuss any specifics on those fronts. But he likewise won’t budge from his oft-recited claims that the Rockets — no matter what you think of their July dealings or how his critics in rival front offices see it — remain a top-five destination in the league that is home to two of the NBA’s top 10 players.

“We are always going to be swinging big,” Morey said. “We’re only about trying to win championships and how to make that happen. We take big swings at things. Obviously, it worked out the last two summers, but the only way you can land a James Harden or a Dwight Howard is by taking big swings. Sometimes, you hit. Sometimes, you miss. Bosh chose to stay in Miami, but that’s not always going to be the case.

“If that had worked out, everyone is obviously writing a very different story about the Rockets, but it didn’t work out. And we had to choose the best path when it didn’t work out.

“I’m very comfortable we made the right decisions all along given the info we had. It’s only the scenario where you know all the information at the end where you can go back and say ‘This was a good decision or this was a bad decision.'”

No. 3: Monroe begins preseason in reserve role — As with most things in the preseason, any kind of performance or lineup adjustment should be taken with a rather large grain of salt. That being said, the hullabaloo surrounding what kind of frontcourt starting lineup the Detroit Pistons would trot out in their preseason opener was answered like so: with big man Greg Monroe coming off the bench. Vincent Goodwill, Jr. of The Detroit News has more on Monroe’s role, which may very well change throughout the preseason:

Coach Stan Van Gundy went with Josh SmithAndre DrummondJodie MeeksCaron Butlerand Brandon Jennings for his first five, bringing Monroe— a restricted free agent this summer who failed to reach an agreement with the team on a long-term deal — off the bench.

Monroe has been a fixture in the starting lineup since 30 games or so into his rookie season, and by all indications, it’ll be either Smith or Monroe as a starter. Not both, as was the case last year when Smith played small forward and the results were less than favorable.

“It’ll be different every game in the preseason,” Van Gundy said. “Seriously, it was random as much as anything. We knew the 10 we wanted to play today. But it was pretty random.”

Monroe scored 10 of his game-high 22 in the fourth quarter, including a putback with 19.7 seconds left that many thought put the game out of reach. But it went to overtime, where the Pistons won, 111-107, at The Palace.

“I don’t have to handle it. I have to play,” Monroe said after the game. “That’s not gonna change, whether I start or come off the bench, how I play. He (Van Gundy) makes the decision. I’m gonna play.”

Van Gundy was pleased with the way Monroe established himself on the interior, running consecutive plays to get him opportunities on both sides of the post. He scored each time

“I thought Greg was outstanding,” Van Gundy said. “He made great moves offensively.”

No. 4: Pacers need a more aggressive Hill this season — In light of the gruesome injury All-Star Paul George suffered, Indiana Pacers’ offseason was basically a huge letdown. Expectations for the once-contending team have been ramped down and for it to stay in the Eastern Conference playoff mix, some players must exceed their usual production. One such player who likely must do this is point guard George Hill, which the Indianapolis Star‘s Candace Buckner details below:

So here comes the inaugural “George Hill played aggressive” script.

When the Pacers opened the preseason Tuesday night with a 103-90 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, Hill led Indiana with 17 points and seven assists. He even added six rebounds, only second best to Lavoy Allen‘s seven.

However, if Indiana expects to compete when the games begin to matter, this plot twist must be more than the sporadic filler.

More than any other time in his Pacers career, Hill has to make aggressiveness a habit. He can’t just show this side – scoring on a variety of pull-ups, floaters and putbacks – every now and then. The absence of last year’s starting wings, Lance Stephenson and Paul George, have left craters in the Pacers’ system. However, Hill can help fill the void by playing as he did Tuesday night, reacting instinctively to the rhythm of the game for his own shots while still helping his teammates get looks.

“It’s just staying with the flow of the offense,” Hill said. “Last year, I was calling out a play, going to the corner and hopefully the ball swings my way or it was more in Paul and Lance’s hands. (Tuesday) I was just trying to stay with the flow of the offense but also keep everybody involved but finding a way to keep myself involved.”

” ‘PUI mode,” coach Frank Vogel called it. “IUPUI attack mode.”

In other words: Think back to the guy who averaged 21.5 points per game during his final year in college, and play like him.

“He did just that,” Vogel said. “We’re going to need more scoring from him this year, (so) I just used that first burst in the second half to give him that opportunity.”

If guys aren't in this locker room I don't have much time for them — if any.

– Chris Bosh

Bosh made the revelation as he was asked about the Heat's game against the Cavaliers on Saturday when Bosh and Dwyane Wade will take the court for the first time against James, who decided to break up Miami's "Big Three" by returning to his native Ohio this offseason. Bosh and Wade, who were also free agents, chose to return to Miami.

Asked by reporters if he had talked to his former teammate since James' decision to leave the Heat, Bosh answered a succinct, "No."

As to whether he was looking forward to seeing James on Saturday at the game in Rio de Janeiro, he replied with a lukewarm, "Yeah … I don't know."

"I'm in the mode where I'm trying to lead my team, help these guys out around here," he said.

Garrett W. Ellwood/NBAE/Getty ImagesChris Bosh, left, says he hasn't talked to LeBron James since his former teammate decided to leave the Heat for the Cavaliers.

The Heat's first "real" game against James and the Cavaliers is scheduled for Christmas Day.

Bosh said he's focused on his teammates in the present, not the past.

"Everybody's going to hype it up, and it's going to be a big deal," Bosh said. "But for us, it's just another opportunity to get better. We know everything that's surrounding the situation, and it is what it is. As far as we're concerned, this is our team, this is what we're trying to build toward, the past is the past, we're moving on, and it's good to get this out of the way."

****************

Detroit Pistons power forward Greg Monroe has started in 277 of his 309 regular-season career games, including every game in each of his last three seasons.

So now might seem like an odd time for the 24-year-old to do otherwise.

But as his team attempts to improve upon a trying 29-win season, the possibility of a shake up appear to be acute as ever—particularly under new head coach and team president Stan Van Gundy. Detroit's 111-109 overtime preseason victory against the Chicago Bulls featured a starting lineup that included Brandon Jennings, Jodie Meeks, Caron Butler, Josh Smith and Andre Drummond.

No Greg Monroe.

Hours prior to the game, Van Gundy insisted that we shouldn't read into the decision.

"It'll be different every game in the preseason," Van Gundy told reporters. "Seriously, it was random as much as anything. We knew the 10 we wanted to play today. But it was pretty random."

Of his rotation, Van Gundy added, "We'll keep tinkering until we get it the way we want it."

Already, though, the tinkering has highlighted a potential solution to last season's ill-fated decision to start a trio of big men: Monroe, Smith and Drummond. Both Monroe and Smith are best-equipped to play the 4 spot, and any game plan driven by sound logic—rather than perceived entitlement—will require one of them to come off the bench.

In the end, maybe it won't be Monroe.

After the preseason match with Chicago, he certainly didn't seem concerned.

"I don't have to handle it, I just have to play," he told media. "That's not going to change, whether I start or whether I come off the bench, that's not going to change the way I play. So, you guys might worry about it, but all I'm focused on is being on the court."

Earlier in October, however, Monroe offered a more direct opinion, even speculating that his decision to accept a one-year qualifying offer this summer might impact his role with the team.

"I hope everything that's given here is earned," he said, per The Detroit NewsVincent Goodwill Jr. "If [Van Gundy] has to bring someone off the bench, I would just ask that you do it purely on what people have done on the court. My only question is, if I signed the extension, what would it be then?"

It's a fair question, but—if we're being honest—Monroe's reticence to reach a long-term agreement with the organization probably shouldfactor into the lineup equation.

After the 2014-15 campaign, Smith still has another two years and $28 million remaining on his contract. Van Gundy has every reason to integrate him into his system and offer him the kind of prominent role that might allow him to thrive for the remainder of his deal. At this point, the organization's priority should be making the most of an investment who actually wants to be in the Motor City.

Monroe—on the other hand—has all but purchased his ticket out of Detroit, citing the franchise's new regime as cause for hesitation on a more protracted commitment.

"It's no disrespect to the people working here but it was just tough for me to agree to another four years with new people," Monroe explained, according to Goodwill. "Honestly, if you were to ask the average person would they do that in the arena they're in, they'd say no."

The four-year veteran added that he had nothing but positive feelings for the city and its fans.

In this case, the issue was the Pistons themselves.

Just how bad does Monroe want out? Enough, apparently, that he'd delay a significant payday in order to preserve his free agent flexibility in the summer of 2015—the byproduct of accepting that one-year qualifying offer rather than accepting an extension this summer.

"For Monroe, this is a bold step that few have taken before him," Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski wrote in September. "It brings with it significant financial risk if he suffers a serious injury this season and loses market value. Nevertheless, Monroe has wanted out of Detroit, where he was drafted in 2010, and he'll get his wish next summer."

Dan Lippitt/Getty Images

Indeed, Monroe has wasted little time developing and pursuing an exit strategy. He apparently hoped to find a new home during the offseason as a restricted free agent.

The Washington Post'Michael Lee reported in August that, "Monroe and his agent, David Falk, never sought an offer sheet from another team but pursued sign-and-trade proposals with at least five other teams, including Portland and Oklahoma City, according to person familiar with the discussions."

That sounds like a far more aggressive approach than the wait-and-see posture Monroe claims to have taken. By all accounts, his one-year arrangement with the team has more to do with facilitating a transfer than sizing up the unknown quantity that is Stan Van Gundy.

As an unrestricted free agent in 2015, Monroe can sign a contract with another team without the looming fear that Detroit could match that offer and retain his services accordingly.

This is his endgame.

Even if owner Tom Gores publicly hopes otherwise.

"Greg's a great player, not just a good player," Gores told reporters at the team's media day in September. "We want Greg to be on board for a long time. We'll have a good enough season where we'll attempt to do that.

"We talked to his representatives. We said how much we respected Greg as a person. But ultimately it's Greg's choice. We were disappointed we couldn't make the ultimate deal, of course. Just because we didn't make the deal isn't the end all."

Gregory Shamus/Getty Images

It's a nice thought, but Gores is especially right about one thing: It is indeed Greg's choice.

And it will remain that way in 2015.

In turn, it makes little sense for Detroit to build around Monroe, especially with Smith around until at least 2017.

Particularly optimistic fans may protest that the Pistons should give that oversized front line another chance—even if Smith spent his summer preparing for action at the power forward spot. Unfortunately, those fans probably weren't paying close attention last season (and who can blame them?).

The Smith-Monroe-Drummond lineup wasn't effective on either end of the floor.

The Pistons ranked 24th in effective field-goal percentage and just 29th in true shooting percentage, per Hollinger Stats. And defying expectations that the added size would stifle opposing offenses, Detroit also ranked 27th in both points allowed (giving up 104.7 per contest) and opponent field-goal percentage (at 47 percent).

Something has to give, and it might as well be Monroe.

For what it's worth—not much—Monroe did tally 24 points and nine rebounds coming off the bench in Detroit's first preseason game. There's something to be said for having a talented sixth man who could put up those kind of numbers this season.

It's not a matter of punishing Monroe for taking that qualifying offer. It's about doing what's best for the franchise—both now and in the near-future.

Whether Monroe is part of that future or not.
