rue or false: Shooting is the hottest commodity in the NBA these days.

The answer is trickier than you might think.

From the treetops, it looks like 3-pointers are in vogue more than ever. Teams fired an average of 22.9 3-point attempts every 100 possessions last season — the highest in league history and more than double the rate two decades ago, in 1993-94. In the big-man department, Paul Millsap added the 3-pointer to help him earn an All-Star spot, and Chris Bosh grabbed two championships with a newly minted trifecta.

One way we can tackle the "hot commodity" question is to look at the free-agency market. Remember when everyone freaked out about the Jodie Meeks contract on the opening day of free agency? The shooting-starved Pistons threw $19 million over three years to Kobe Bryant's backup-turned-starter last season. Why? Because he can shoot the heck out of the ball. Meeks was a career-high 40.1 percent from downtown last season while averaging 15.7 points per game as a 2-guard, a position that is shallower than a puddle. So he got his money.

But Meeks is only one tiny speck among nearly 100 players who have signed this offseason. If shooting — particularly the 3-point variety — has become all the rage, wouldn't we be able to see it in the contract data?

This is where it gets interesting. My feeling heading into this study was that we'd see an enormous shooting effect on the free-agency market. If you can shoot 3s, you're due for a big payday. From the other side of the table, teams were paying a premium just to get in on the 3-point action. Or so I thought.

And then I looked closer at the data. Take Kyle Lowry, for instance. The point guard led all free agents with 190 3-pointers last season and netted "just" $12 million annually for four years. That's an absolute steal for the Toronto Raptors, considering he was the East's best point guard last season, putting up 11.6 WAR in his prime.

Looking at the going rate in the free-agency market, it seems Lowry's pockets should be fatter. Teams paid on average $1.8 million per WAR this offseason, which means Lowry deserved something in the neighborhood of $20 million annually if he got paid like the rest of his colleagues did.

If there was a shooting bonus on the market, Lowry didn't see any of it. Put another way, Lowry made more than twice as many 3s as Gordon Hayward last season — guess who got the max? True, Hayward is 24, four years younger than Lowry, but Hayward's contract blewLance Stephenson's deal out of the water, even though Stephenson is younger (23), registered better overall numbers and shot 3s better than Hayward.

There are more instances of big free-agent money going to non-shooters as opposed to elite shooters. Jordan Hill, who is listed at 26 but may secretly have the body of a 46-year-old, got more annual money than one of the stretchiest bigs in the league, Channing Frye. Luol Deng, with a 30.2 percent shooting percentage last season, will be receiving a bigger paycheck than Trevor Ariza, who shot 41 percent from deep. Again, non-shooters don't seem to be missing out on all of the free-agency fun.

To be sure, plenty of 3-point marksmen got paid. Bosh, a 3-point shooter, netted a max contract despite having somewhat pedestrian numbers. But it's interesting to note that of the five biggest bargains of the offseason according to WAR-to-dollar conversions, four were elite 3-point shooters: Dirk Nowitzki, Vince Carter, Frye and Lowry (Dallas' Al-Farouq Aminu was the other). Even if we take an extra step and adjust for age, that quartet still took well-below-market deals. Nowitzki's case is an extreme one; it's pretty much unprecedented for a player of his caliber to sign for $8.3 million annually after putting up All-NBA numbers.

On the whole, good shooters tend to get paid more money. Duh. As you might suspect, there is a small link between free-agency money this offseason and how many 3-pointers they made in 2013-14. But its effect is more muted than you might think.

The math gets a little more serious from here on out, so if numbers make you queasy, you might want to sit the next couple of plays out. For the statisticians out there, the correlation coefficient between the two key variables (annual contract dollars and 3-pointers made) stood at .22 where zero is completely random and plus-1 is a perfectly positive relationship (one variable goes up, so does the other) and minus-1 is a negative relationship (one goes up, other goes down). That relationship was much cloudier in both the 2013 offseason (correlation coefficient of 0.081) and 2012 offseason (0.095), indicating that the market might be tilting somewhat toward shooters.

But the link between contracts and shooting isn't nearly as strong now as it was in 2009, aka the year of Ben Gordon's big contract. That 2009 offseason saw a .414 correlation coefficient between shooting and contract dollars. The three top contracts that summer went to Gordon, Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Kidd, all elite shooters from beyond the arc.

For a more rigorous analysis to determine whether there is a clear shooting effect on the market, I ran a regression that predicted free-agency dollars after controlling for various factors including age, height, minutes played, points per game, 3-point makes, WAR and whether they made the All-Star game the previous season (an considerable effect found by ESPN Insider Kevin Pelton). To my surprise, 3-point shooting was not statistically significant this offseason in predicting contract dollars. However, in the past six seasons, 3-point shooting did appear to have an effect over a larger sample of more than 500 player contracts. (Hat-tip to Pelton for the historical contract data.)

These statistical findings run counter to what an NBA veteran recently conveyed to ESPN's Kevin Arnovitz in Las Vegas. "You have to be able to shoot the ball" the NBA veteran said to Arnovitz. "Especially big men. You look at Spencer Hawes. Look at Channing Frye. That's good money. You can have a job for a long time if you can shoot."

What the player did not mention was that Hill, Pau Gasol and Marcin Gortat all got paid handsomely for their inside games.

Bottom line: 3-point shooting doesn't dictate free-agency money nearly as much as you may have suspected. We'd like to think that 3-pointers are taking over the NBA and thus floor-spacers have suddenly become a scorching-hot commodity. But teams still doled out big money to Hill, Gortat, Gasol and Dwyane Wade, none of whom are doing much to stretch the floor. Shooters may be running the league, but they're not running away with the money.

        לפני שנה הייתי מסתפק ב+1 ואולי הייתי מוסיף איזה סימן קריאה, אבל היום אני מבין את שתי התכונות של ווסטברוק שממש לא קל לוותר עליהן. התכונה הראשונה היא יכולת הלמידה שלו והיכולת שלו להשתפר כל שנה. היכולת השנייה היא ההגנה שלו. אם ראית אותו שומר בגמר המערב השנה אתה אמור לדעת על מה אני מדבר.

          מסכים איתך שהוא כישרון ענק, אבל כשהוא משחק לצד דוראנט הוא מתפספס, אין מה לעשות..
          לא יודע את מי הם יכולים להביא ובאיזו עמדה, אבל מה שבטוח שכרגע אצל הת'אנדר סך החלקים קטן מהשלם.

            אין ספק שסך החלקים קטן מהשלם אבל זה יכול להשתנות בגלל יכולת הלמידה של ווסטברוק וכן מאמן נורמלי שייסדר לו את הברגים בראש.

      ווסטברוק מתאים לסמי קונטנדרית, או קבוצה טובה שצריכה סופרסטאר. שיפרוץ כמספר 1 ללא עוררין, בלי סייד קיק דומיננטי כמו מה שיש לו עכשיו, הוא יתן משחקים ברמה של אלן אייברסון. מבחינת אוקלהומה, טרייד שלו על רונדו יהיה מעולה. הייתי מנסה להביא רכז ותיק, בינוני פלוס, שיפתח ויאפשר לראס להיות שוטינג גארד.

    They need them to take pictures and record the carefully staged piles of bloody children and women. If the journalists leave, they have lost the vehicle for distributing their bloody ad campaign.
    Hamas asked for a cease-fire.
    And they broke it. They break every single one. Israel is setting up a massive field hospital to treat our enemies. From 8 pm on tonight there will be a working maternity ward, an operating theater…a working hospital. For… our enemies.
    We are going to lose more boys. Last night we lost 13. With each day we are going to lose more.
    But everyone here now understands this is a fight to the death. It is them or us.
    They cannot compromise and they don’t want peace or to share or to negotiate. They want revenge even if it means killing their own people. So we have to go in there and do things none of us want to do, but we have to.

    היחיד שבאמת מעלה לי קצת סימני שאלה מבין כל השמות פה זה וונלואה(והייתי סקפטי לגביו משך כל העונה) וזה לא בגלל מה שהוא הראה עד עכשיו במשחקי סאמר ליג אלא מהדברים שאין לו וספק יהיו לו.

    כל השאר- סקייס איס דה לימיט עבורם.

    את סטאוסקאס זיהיתי לפני שנתיים כשהיה שחקן של 5 דק' במישיגן וכבר אז כתבתי שהוא לא סתם איזה פיור שוטר לבן וסלבי.
    יש לו יכולת לקלוע מכדרור לדעתי ברמה שיכולה להגיע לרמה של קרי(לא פחות). השאלה איך ישתמשו בו בקינגס.
    אם יתנו לו את הביטחון להוליך את הכדור ולשחק לפעמים PG כמו שהיה במישיגן אז הוא באמת יתפתח.
    אם לא אז זה עוד יכול להגמר כמו הסיפור של ג'אמיר פרדט שם.
    הקינגס מומחים בלא לדעת איך לנצל את הכשרונות שלהם.

    בקשר לשאר:
    סמארט- מגיע בלי קליעה ועם קבלת החלטות מפוקפקת אבל הכשרון שלו במקומו לא הייתי עובד בשלב הראשון על הקליעה אלא יוצר לעצמו שם בליגה קודם כל מהדברים שהוא בולט בהם שזה ההגנה האישית והיתרון בכוח על כל הPGדים בליגה, משמע לחדור לחדור וכמה שיותר.
    ואם יש משהו שהייתי רוצה שיעבוד עליו זה הסיומת ממגע, מזה הוא צריך לצבור את הנק' שלו בעונה הראשונה.
    אם יהיו שם סבלניים אז גם הקליעה תגיע מתישהו.

    ההפתעה היחידה מהשמות פה זה ג'וליוס רנדל שהראה משהו בקיץ שלא חשבו שיש לו בכלל שזה הכדרור.
    מי שראה אותו מכדרר מגרש שלם ואז נותן איזה אסיסט אללה מג'יק מבין כמה ביטחון וכישרון יש לילד הזה.
    גם ההגנה שלו הייתה לא רעה להבדיל מההגנה שלו לאורך כל העונה בקנטאקי(שהשתפרה רק בטורניר עצמו).

    אם יהיה לי מה להוסיף אני אוסיף על עוד כמה רוקיז ששווה לשים לב אליהם(ובעיקר מה רמת הציפיות שצריכה להיות מהם העונה).

    בליברפול- סטארידג', מרקוביץ', פלאננגן, לוברן לא ישחקו.

    אגב במשחק הקודם קרה משהו מדהים פאקינג ריקי לאמברט החטיא פנדל אחרי שכבש את כל 49 הפנדלים האחרונים שלו שזה מדהים.

    לרנדל לא יהיה הרבה דקות עם הקו קדמי של הלייקרס (קרלוס בוזר,ג'ורדן היל,אד דייויס,רוברט סוקרה,ריאן קלי)וגם כי הם רוצים ניסיון
    לעומת פארקר שיהיה הכוכב הראשי אצל המילווקי
    וגם וויגינס יכול להיבחר (אם יעבור למינסוטה)

      ג'אבארי גם כן צריך להיות מעומד טבעי לתואר למרות שאני לא כל כך בטוח שהולכים לבנות את ההתקפה סביבו העונה.

      ראו כבר יפה בסאמר ליג איזה אחד שמתחיל להשתלט ובצדק על ההתקפה ועל ההגנה שם.

      נואל הוא מעומד חזק מאוד לתואר.

            הוא נראה חייתי ומוכן לקרב על החמישייה.

            היל- 18 לשנתיים עם אופציה ליציאה מהחוזה שלו אחרי שנה*.

            בוזר תורם בשנים האחרונות בעיקר לסטט' של עצמו ובטח שלא לקבוצה(תשאל את תיבודו שלא הכניס אותו לרבע 4 בכמעט אף משחק בעונה האחרונה).

            היל ישחק סנטר, אד דייוויס גם יחלתר שם במידת הצורך(ואולי בכלל יעבור בטרייד אחרי שזכינו בלוטו עם החוזה של בוזר).

            בכל אופן אף אחד מהם לא צריך לפגוע באמת בהתפתחות של רנדל וזה מה שחשוב.

            אני לא צריך לקרוא את הכתבה הזאת שוב כדי לקבל פרספקטיבה מי זה בוזר.

            הוא שחקן טוב בליגה שהיה אוברפייד הרבה מאוד עונות.
            ועדיין פרווה מאוד בהגנה אבל כן תורם להתקפה עד גבול מסוים.
            זה לא הופך אותו לאנדרייטד זה רק הופך אותו לעסקה מאוד משתלמת עבור הלייקרס במחיר של בדיחה.
            ושוב זה לא אמור לגזול דק' או לפגוע בהתפתחות של רנדל, נהפוכו אני בטוח שוטרן כמו בוזר שידוע כשחקן רציני יכול רק לתרום לו.

            בדק' משחק אין מה לדאוג.

    פיין דווקא בסיטואציה בעייתית באטלנטה בטח אם הורפורד חוזר בריא וטוב.

    חבל זה אחד מהשחקנים שאני הכי מחזיק מהם בקלאס הזה(והוא בטוח הנשמה הכי טובה והבחור הכי נחמד במחזור הזה).

    הוא מגיע מאוד מוכן לדעתי וחבל שנפל דווקא לסיטואציה באטלנטה.
    אגב לפני שתי עונות הוא היה מקום 2 בביג טן בקליעה מהקו- כמעט 85 אחוז.
    מקום ראשון סטאוסקאס.
