בקיצור נמרץ קמצוץ ממה שקרה היום (אתמול) במכללות:

*השחקן שבטוח היה רוצה את ג'ואל אימביד בקבוצה – אנדרו ויגינס – הוא גם השחקן המרוויח ביותר מפציעתו של הענק מקמרון. הוא כבר קלע 40 נק', והיום קבר 30 נק' והיה גבור הנצחון של קנזס על אוקלהומה סטייט 70-77 (הארכה). קנזס פיגרה בשתיים כשאנדרו קבר סל שבוודאי יביא לו מליונים בקרוב: הוא חטף כדור בבייסליין, ניתר לפיידאוויי, והישווה את התוצאה – וכך גרם להארכה. הנצחון בהארכה הביא להם מקום בחצי הגמר. מרכוס סמארט, יריבו של ויגינס באוקלהומה סטייט (ובדראפט) קלע 14, אך החמיץ את ארבע זריקותיו בהארכה. קנזס  תשחק נגד איובה סטייט בחצי הגמר מחר (היום).

*בגרינסבורו, בוריס בוג'נובסקי קיבל כדור ארוך מאוקרו ווייט ודינקק עם 0.4 שניות לתת לפלורידה סטייט נצחון 65-67 בסיבוב השני של ה-ACC.

*טרייסי אאברמס קלע 25 ואילינוי גברה 54-64 על אינדיאנה בביג 10. היא תפגוש מחר את מישיגן.

Who's Better: Howard or Noah?

זהו מאמר מהאינסיידר שאין ביכולתכם להוציא. לי אין כוח לתרגמו. אז מי שמעוניין, הנה ההשוואה בין השניים, וכיצד כותב המאמר הגיע למסקנה שנואה הוא סנטר טוב יותר מדוויין האוארד:

There is a growing debate about this year's choice for first-team All-NBA center, as Joakim Noah's reputation grows with each dive to the floor and triple-double on the stat sheet. Meanwhile, Dwight Howard is enjoying a banner first season in Houston. Howard had his five-year streak of first-team selections snapped last year, and he's looking to reclaim the crown this season.

It's been pointed out that, for Chicago, Noah's candidacy for first-team All-NBA goes beyond being a fun debate. There are possible cap and tax ramifications involved, so this is serious business for the Bulls.

Howard and Noah will clash at the United Center in Chicago on Thursday, making this a perfect time to compare the arsenals of two guys who play the center position extremely well but do so in wildly disparate manners.

Though five centers in the NBA are on pace to finish at least 12 wins above replacement, including Noah (13.1) and Howard (12.5), most would agree the two have distinguished themselves beyond the numbers. It's going to come down to the ultimate contrast between a prototypical power big man in Howard and one whose game is based on elite skill in Noah.

So who is the first-team All-NBA center? Who's better?

 

 

 

 

1. How well and how many possessions does the player use on offense?

 

Howard has the third-highest usage rate of qualifying centers, ranking behind the high-volume skill sets of DeMarcus Cousins and Al Jefferson. With a usage just over 18 percent, Noah is well down the list, but his standout offensive trait is his ability to facilitate.

Howard is by far the more efficient scorer, with a true shooting percentage (.595) that is easily the best among centers with above-average usage rates. Noah (.538) has a level of shooting efficiency more typical of a high-volume center like Jefferson. The respective turnover rates of the centers are virtually identical and are high for the position.

Advantage: Howard (big)

 

 

 

 

2. How much impact does the player have on the possessions he doesn't use?

 

If Noah is going to close the offensive value gap on Howard, this is where it has to happen. We know Noah is not just a better passer than Howard, but he also is probably the best distributor among big men in the game. With Derrick Rose out the last couple of years, the Bulls have run most of their half-court sets through Noah, who operates out of the high post.

Howard, meanwhile, splits his time between the low block and other sets that get him moving toward the basket. Noah is an initiator, Howard a finisher. So it's almost not fair to point out that Noah's assist rate (6.5 percent) leads all centers and nearly triples Howard's figure (2.3).

Noah gets a few more offensive rebounds, so he creates more second chances for his team. At the bottom line, according the on-court, off-court figures at Basketball-Reference.com, the Bulls are 6.9 points better on offense for each 100 possessions when Noah is on the floor. Howard nudges the Houston offense by 4.5 points, but the Rockets have a much better team offense than Chicago. Noah gets the edge here, but it's not as pronounced as you might have imagined.

Advantage: Noah

 

 

 

 

3. How good is the player's individual defense?

 

Howard has a small edge in the per-play metrics from Synergy Sports Technology, ranking in the 85th percentile of all players, while Noah clocks in at the 74th percentile.

Both players are the defensive backbones for their teams, so more consideration needs to be given to team defense than on-ball indicators. Both are good on the ball. The stout Howard is, as you'd expect, better against post-ups, while the more agile Noah has the edge against isolations and the pick-and roll.

Advantage: Howard (slight)

 

 

 

 

4. How good of a team defender is the player?

 

According to the counting stats, Howard has slight edges in defensive rebounding and blocks while Noah gets more steals and commits fewer fouls. According to the SportVU tracking data at NBA.com, Noah has had more success protecting the rim. Opponents have hit just 44.8 percent of their shots when Noah is within five feet of the basket and the opponent, while Howard's opponents have converted 48.6 percent.

Subjectively, Noah is a more versatile defender who gives the Bulls the option of switching the pick-and-roll against even many of the top opposing perimeter players. The Bulls have actually been one point better per 100 possessions with Noah off the floor, while the Rockets have been one point better with Howard playing. Neither figure means much in a one-season sample, and Noah is hampered by the court time he shares with Carlos Boozer. In the end, you have to consider what the players contribute to, and the Bulls have one of the league's best defenses.

Advantage: Noah

 

 

 

 

5. What sort of intangibles does the player bring to the table?

 

I don't like to dwell on the unquantifiable, but I leave this question on the board because teams have to take it into consideration. Noah is an inspirational figure among his teammates, something I've seen firsthand in Chicago. Howard had a reputation as a grouser, but that's in his past and all evidence is that things are swell in Houston. I'll give Noah a slight edge, as his intangibles might be the most alluring in the league. Also, as Amin Elhassan pointed out, Noah is one of the best screeners in the league.

Advantage: Noah (slight)

 

 

 

 

Bottom line

 

Though Howard has three more years of NBA experience than Noah, it's the latter who is actually the older player. So it's safe to say that even now, if an NBA expansion team could pick any center regardless of cap considerations and such, it would almost certainly take Howard. However, in this instance, we're trying to decide the first-team All-NBA winner for this season. It's awfully close. The deciding factor for me is that Noah has a bottom-line edge in WARP, his edge has been gradually growing, and he has compiled his numbers with a weaker supporting cast than Howard has in Houston.

Overall advantage: Noah (note this is a fluid race, and by next week, the conclusion may be different)

    אוקלהומה סטייט זה קן הקוקיה של המכללות השנה.

    הקבוצה עם הכי הרבה פסיכים שאני זוכר אולי מהקנטאקי של קאזינס.

    לא להאמין אבל היא וביילור לא היו רחוקות מלא להיות בטורניר המכללות.

    וויגינס אדיר! לא נראה לי שהוא אישית מתגעגע לאמביד. הוא היה צריך את התקופה הזאת כדי להראות לכל העולם מה הוא שווה כשהוא מקבל חופש פעולה אמיתי לעשות כמעט מה שהוא רוצה על הפארקט ב-3-4 עמדות שונות שהוא אוהב לשחק בהן.

    היום אולי משחק הקליעה הכי יעיל שלו ומול הברברים של אוקלהומה סטייט שכל המשחק חיפשו להוציא אותו משיווי משקל.

    לפי המשחק של אתמול והשבועיים האחרונים נואה בכושר של חייו. ברור שכרגע הוא טוב מהווארד.
    ו-וויגינס נראה שסוף סוף מוצא את הקול שלו בקבוצה, מה שמדהים אותי זה שהוא כזה מגן מעולה, בד״כ שחקנים עם כישורים התקפיים כאלה מחפפים בהגנה אבל הוא לא מוותר על אף מהלך. אני אוהב את הילד.

      כי ברור שאתה היית מוותר על 9 מליון דולר דולר מובטחים .. זה לא אשמתו כל הסיפור, זה אשמת מי שהחתים שחקן בן 38! על חוזה כזה לטווח כזה. דרך אגב, הוא אף פעם לא התיימר להיות אוהד לייקרס או מישהו שהמועדון חשוב לו יותר מכל מקום עבודה אחר..

            אם הייתי GM אז כנראה שמלכתחילה לא היינו מנהלים את הדיון הזה… אלה מבחינתי הסנטרים המובילים בליגה חלקם הרבה יותר טובים מגוויט(בעיקר בפן התחרותי ובארסנל ההתקפי) וחלקם כמו דראמונד כבר עכשיו שווים לו ועם פוטנציאל הרבה יותר גדול… דוויט הוא פשוט לוזר שלמרות יתרון פיזי ואתלטי בלתי נתפס לא יודע לשחק בפוסט ובשורה התחתונה אין לו שום יצר תחרותיות הוא כל הזמן מחייך כמו סמיילי מנצח מפסיד בכלל לא אכפת לו העיקר שהצ'קים ממשיכים להגיע…
