Commissioner Adam Silver says what is happening in NBA is rebuilding, not tanking

Are you surprised the core five young guys — you, Trey Burke, Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter, and Alec Burks — haven’t played much as a lineup? I don’t think you guys have cracked even 50 minutes together. [Editor's note: They're actually at 52 after Monday.] That’s an intriguing group, right?

Yeah, it is. I don’t know if I’m surprised. It’s just whatever Coach has felt like has given us the best chance to win games. And for whatever reason, with that lineup, it hasn’t been the case.

Do you care about playing shooting guard or small forward? You start at shooting guard, but when Alec comes in, you shift over to small forward.

It doesn’t matter to me. It’s all just about matchups. The 2 and 3 are basically the same thing.

I hear that there is a fair chance to get Kevin Love. Have you heard of it??

I mean, we’ll see. Eveybody talks about it

    1. NBA age change winners
Plenty stand to benefit from potential increase in NBA's entry age

Adam Silver has shown interest in working with the NBPA to increase the league's minimum age.
Each week during the college basketball season, ESPN Insiders Jay Bilas and Jeff Goodman will weigh in on the biggest questions of the sport. In a special edition this week, the duo break down the implications of a potential increase to the NBA's entry age.

The discussion: Whom do you see as the winners if such a change is enacted? Any losers?
Jay Bilas: If the NBA and National Basketball Players Association are able to agree upon a draft eligibility rule of 20 years old and two years removed from high school, it would be a positive for all levels of basketball, especially the NBA.

Right now, the NBA wastes money on the development of young talent that is simply not prepared to make an immediate impact. With another year added to the current age limit, the NBA will be able to make better decisions in scouting and drafting, and eliminate some significant risk. In addition, the players will be more mature and more prepared, on and off the court.

NBA teams will get more players who will be able to make an immediate impact, and it will preserve more veteran jobs. The quality of play in the NBA would improve, and roster spots would not be taken up by players who are not prepared to contribute immediately.

There would be no losers in this, just winners. Clearly, an increased age limit will benefit college basketball by keeping marquee talent in the college game for a longer period of time. There would be a greater degree of certainty on every level of the game. But, as a policy matter, it also greatly benefits the players.

For most young players, the college experience (not just in the classroom) is the best thing, and is far superior to the D-League or playing professionally overseas. Right now, the game has a wonderful opportunity for increased cooperation. With a new commissioner and a new head of the union, it is a perfect time to establish a dialogue and gain greater understanding among the different levels of the game. The NBA seems willing to make significant concessions to the players to get an increased age limit, and the NCAA would be well served to continue to search for creative ways to provide its players with incentive to stay in school longer. That includes finding creative ways to cooperate with the NBA on player development, if the NCAA truly believes additional years in school are the best thing for any player.

Instead of constructing barriers to players staying in school — such as limiting practice time outside of the season — we should be looking for creative ways to keep them in school. If progress is made in that area, there won't be any real losers to an age increase.

Jeff Goodman: It depends a bit on the specifics of the rule change, but it's a win-win for the game of basketball overall if the two sides can come to an agreement with the collective bargaining agreement and increase the minimum age limit in the NBA.

One issue is that many kids come into college nowadays with the thought that they will only be there for a matter of months, so they are more focused on their draft stock than how they fit into a team. A two-year minimum stay would alter that thought process. It would also help the NBA game because the league would get players who are more mature and already have built a "brand" for two full seasons in the college ranks.

However, we don't know whether high school players would be allowed to go directly to the NBA — as was the case years ago. There are a small number of players who are prepared to do so (e.g., LeBron James, Kobe Bryant), but there are also plenty of players who make mistakes. I would say that if they do opt to change the rule to one under which players can come out of high school or have to remain two seasons in college, we need to give those who do not get drafted an opportunity to still head to college. High school kids are not receiving the same level of quality information those in college are able to get. If we bar those kids from a shot at playing in college, they definitely would be on the losing end.

The winners in all of this? Just about everyone. The NBA gets kids who are far more ready than they are after just one year in college. The players are more prepared to go into the NBA — physically and emotionally — and also will be more than halfway (including summer classes) toward their college degree. The only ones I worry about are the high school kids who just don't have the proper information to make a well-informed decision, but that can be rectified by the NBA and the NCAA agreeing to give those kids a chance to still attend college.

Yes it's great for the NBA and great for NCAAM..but it's not good for many of the kids. Some of the kids it is good for even if they dont know it. But the kids it hurts are the kids who know they are good enough (and actually are) for the NBA. It ends up costing them money and lots of it. What if they get hurt in a second year of college and they drop draft boards and lose millions because of it? With that said, I do believe they should make it 2 years. The benefits the NCAAM would see would be off the charts. More parity would be created. 5 of the top 15 recruits wouldn't be heading to the same team (Kentucky, Duke, Kansas) year after year after year. They would want to showcase and begin choosing other teams where they wouldnt have to wait behind sophomores who are forced to stay another year. NCAAM would be the primary beneficiaries, followed by the NBA, followed by kids who have no business entering the draft after 1 year overseas or in college while it would be horrible for the few NBA ready players who finish 1 year of college.

Jack Hagmeier ha, was the billions a typo? i hope so. and not sure how you dont see that it is indeed costing them money. yes 1 more year, 1 more year of not making 5-6 mil. increased odds of having a severe injury while in college. are you blind to reality? nobody here is disputing the fact these guys make a lot of money when it is all said and done.

Anybody that wants to change the age limit to 20 is just a moron like Jay Bilas who knows nothing about the NBA. Would LeBron James, Kevin Garrett, Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant have been forbidden from two years on the league? Just because Michael Jordan chose Kwame Brown shouldn’t mean that 18 year olds don’t out. This is all about owners not taking any chance with paying a contract. Consider that college graduates (see Christan Latner or Stacy King) often don’t work. Don’t deprive fans from seeing LeBron, Garrnet, Dwight and Kobe. Shame on anyone for even suggesting a age limit.

OF COURSE this is all about the owners and why shouldn't it be??? They're the ones paying these guys…it's their league, the players just play in it. And how much fun would it have been to see LeBron or Dwight crushing it in college?

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the winners would also be the non-Duke-Kentucky-Kansas-Arizona etc. schools. I believe a lot of these top players pick their schools based on the fact that the top prospects in the class before them will be gone and thus an open starting role for them. If they are required to stay two years, I think a lot of different choices would be made and the secondary colleges would start seeing the top prospects. This would make the college game all the better. Maybe a top 5 draft guarantee for freshman to enter the draft could be a concession. I hope there are no concessions and the age is changed. Don't forget all those veteran players who will get kicked off an NBA roster by those incoming frosh.

INCREASING THE AGE LIMIT IS BETTER FOR THE FANS!!! The NBA and NCAAB are billion dollar businesses because of who? Not the players. Not the owners. Not the universities. THE FANS. This is a BUSINESS people! A business of selling tickets! Its called entertainment! No different than selling tickets to a concert, or a movie, or a play, or whatever. The ONLY goal in mind should be improving the product that is being sold to the people that make it all possible. If basketball fans got together and boycotted the NBA and the league's money dried up, guess what happens. NO ONE MAKES A DIME AND ITS ALL OVER. One and done players simply just become DONE. It shouldn't matter what the players want, or what the coaches want, or what anyone employed by Big Basketball wants. Just like any other business in the world, the only question should be, " What do the CUSTOMERS want?" Increasing the age limit makes for BETTER BASKETBALL at both the college and pro levels, and that is all that should matter.

The first answer to the question of who benefits most HAS TO BE the NCAA! The NCAA is the only person/entity that ALWAYS benefits from this idea. For some players this will only hinder their development. Certain guys like Rose, LeBron, BigAnt and many others will not develop as well playing agaisnt guys they have SUCH A DRASTIC physical advantage over. Those guys would be better off learning in an environment where they are playing with peers. Obviously there would be some guys who benefit and their are lots of potential benefits/downsides for all parties involved.

My opinon: It should either stay the same or go to two mandatory years. I would strongly suggest they do not make it a junior year thing, like football. I also think this shouldn't happen because IMO players should be able to cash in when they are offered the opportu
