What we're seeing and hearing

inside the NBA bubble

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The first six days inside the NBA bubble have been filled with action. We've seen massive scoring performances (hello, T.J. Warren), dramatic comebacks (what's up, Houston Rockets) and what has generally been high-quality basketball from teams fighting for the playoffs (here's not looking at you, bottom of the Eastern Conference).

And we've been here for all of it, watching and listening to what's going on at the NBA campus as well as what people on the outside have seen and thought about it.ADVERTISEMENT

Boston Celtics

  • Big question: Can Boston defend bigs?

At the trade deadline, teams were watching the Celtics to see whether they would try to do something to shore up their interior defense. While Daniel Theis has been a revelation replacing Al Horford, he isn't able to handle the likes of Joel EmbiidBrook Lopez or Marc Gasol inside — all players Boston will have to face to make it out of the East.

So far inside the bubble, Steven Adams had a strong scrimmage performance and Jusuf Nurkic and Bam Adebayo had their way with Boston in the paint. Opposing scouts are wondering whether the Celtics made a mistake in failing to address this need in February — particularly with it looking more and more likely that Boston is going to play Embiid and the 76ers in the first round of the playoffs.

2. Boston Celtics (Previously 7th), 47-23 (+6.3 net rating)

Wins and losses this week: Heat (L), Nets (W), Raptors (W), Magic (W)

Are they in a good spot? They really are in a good spot. It seems like Kemba Walker is progressing, and the Boston Celtics can throw four monster perimeter scorers at any team they face. The loss to Miami this week was tough, but they rallied by demolishing Toronto. That felt like a statement game, even if it’s a mostly meaningless seeding game in the bubble. Boston still needs to find ways to minimize its lack of size and rim protection in the playoffs, but Brad Stevens has this team playing pretty well at the right time.

Brooklyn Nets

  • Playoff implications: They're making it in

The Nets entered the bubble with a decimated roster. A few observers around the league thought they had a chance to fall out of the playoffs entirely, thus keeping their 2020 lottery-protected first-round pick. That would have been an intriguing development heading into the offseason, with the franchise having an additional trade chip to use to add talent around Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant.

But after beating the Washington Wizards on Sunday and shocking the Bucks on Tuesday, Brooklyn now has a greater than 99% chance of making the playoffs, per ESPN's Basketball Power Index (BPI). The Minnesota Timberwolves can breathe easy about keeping Brooklyn's selection.

re they in a good spot? Considering all of the players missing for the Nets, they’ve actually been highly successful here in the bubble. The win over Milwaukee was nice, but it was also in a game the Bucks didn’t really play their best players big minutes. They waved the 2nd and 3rd unit flags to finish out that contest. Brooklyn was winning before that, but we know 48-minute games can go poorly for overmatched teams having a nice first half. Beating the Sacramento Kings and a Clippers team without Paul George were nice wins though. This team continues to grow under Jacque Vaughn, just like it did with Kenny Atkinson.

Dallas Mavericks

  • Leaguewide chatter: Luka's step-back is OK with us

Luka Doncic is already one of the best players in the NBA. But for all of his offensive gifts, these step-back 3-pointers are just not really working yet.

Doncic has taken the second most in the league this season (298), per Second Spectrum tracking data — about 150 more than Jayson Tatum (third overall) while still trailing James Harden by around 250 shots. Doncic has made only 92 of these attempts, and his effective field goal percentage (46.3%) ranks 22nd among the 25 players with 50 tries. In the restart, he's shooting 2-for-16 (12.5%).

The threat of step-back 3s sets up all kinds of things offensively … but only if the opposing defense thinks they're going in. An executive from a Western Conference opponent said the best way to stop Doncic might be to just give him that shot as much as he wants.

MORE: Why these seeding games matter for Luka and the Mavs

Are they in a good spot? The win over the Bucks definitely made this whole thing look a lot better. When Luka Doncic put on a show against the reigning MVP, everybody started getting those warm fuzzy feelings about the Mavs again. However, the bubble has exposed just how bad this defense is and how much work they need to keep that together for extended stretches. Sure, their offense is insane, but the Mavs need to defend better to be the threat some thought they might be.

Denver Nuggets

  • Overheard: MPJ bounces back after getting called out

After the Nuggets were blown out by the Miami Heat in their first seeding game, coach Mike Malone didn't hold back in his criticism of rookie forward Michael Porter Jr., singling him out for a need to play better on both ends. Porter clearly heard it. He sent his coach three separate texts before Monday's matchup against the Thunder, pleading with Malone to trust him.

"I'm gonna stay with you," Malone said he told Porter in response — and it worked out. Porter had 37 points and 12 boards in an overtime win over the Thunder.

Malone is a stickler for detail with a very good team. Porter has had an up-and-down rookie season, regularly flailing on the defensive end like he did against Miami. But if he stays healthy, continues to develop and finds the right role, Porter could be a huge part of Denver's future playing next to Nikola Jokic.

ins and losses this week: Thunder (W), Spurs (W), Blazers (L), Jazz (W)

Are they in a good spot? It’s getting there for the Nuggets. They just got Jamal Murray back and blew right through his minutes restriction stop sign in the first game. They’re still looking to get Gary Harris and Will Barton back into the mix by playoff time. Denver still has a shot at getting the 2-seed if it beats the Clippers, but it will either need the Clippers to lose their other game, or the Nuggets will have to win all three games (Lakers, Clippers, Raptors). Denver has received great production from Michael Porter Jr. with other starters out. So how do they integrate him into the rhythm of this team when everybody is healthy in a playoff atmosphere?

Houston Rockets

While talk about the Rockets centers on the star backcourt, one scout said he was particularly impressed with Danuel House, an unheralded guard logging 30 minutes with a plus-2.7 net rating this season.

"I just like him because he knows how to play with star players," the scout said. "He can cut, finish, guard. I think he's solid."

House has gotten off to a terrific start inside the bubble, scoring 20 points and hitting six 3s against the Mavs on Friday before adding four more triples against the Bucks on Sunday. He's become a key cog in Houston's "6-7s or less" lineup.

Are they in a good spot? The Houston Rockets are in about as good of a spot as they could have hoped. They still need to see how healthy Eric Gordon will be for the playoffs, but mostly everything else is going well. The Rockets are locking themselves into a 4-5 matchup, which will either be against Chris Paul and the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Utah Jazz franchise they put out of the playoffs annually.

We still have a ton of questions about their extreme small ball, but James Harden and Russell Westbrook look pretty good. PJ Tucker, Robert Covington and Danuel House look pretty good. This Rockets team has settled comfortably into an uncomfortable identity.

Indiana Pacers

  • Big development: Indiana's improvement system strikes again

The Pacers have done a masterful job of acquiring players via free agency or trade — Victor OladipoDomantas SabonisThaddeus YoungBojan Bogdanovic — and helping turn them into better players.

While people might not have realized T.J. Warren was already the latest success story from Indiana's player-development apparatus before he arrived in the bubble, his first three games — going for 53 points against Philadelphia on Saturday before again topping 30 points against the Wizards and Magic — made it clear. This is how a small-market team stays relevant and competitive.

Are they in a good spot? Not many teams have had as good of a bubble experience as the Indiana Pacers. A lot of it is due to T.J. Warren becoming a force on the offensive end of the floor. He was already a bucket, but he’s expanded his game into being the number one scoring option on this team. Victor Oladipo isn’t at full strength. Domantas Sabonis isn’t playing. Warren just slides into the role of leading this offense. Malcolm Brogdon has been good and they’ve gotten great minutes from Aaron Holiday, but Warren has them looking like a first-round nuisance.

LA Clippers

  • Leaguewide chatter: Still scary when not at full strength

Yes, the Clippers lost to the Lakers in their opening game in the bubble. But they've been without both Lou Williams and Montrezl HarrellIvica Zubac and Landry Shamet are rounding into form after extended absences; and now Patrick Beverley is dealing with a calf injury. That's why they're still considered the title favorites by several NBA insiders polled by ESPN inside and outside the bubble.

But one scout did ask whether the Clippers' never-ending lack of continuity will come back to haunt them.

"I'm interested to see how they come together," the scout said. "They have never had their whole team, and they still don't."

Are they in a good spot? The Clippers are right where they want to be. They’d love to have Montrezl Harrell, Lou Williams and Patrick Beverley back in full rhythm right now, but they also know they have plenty of time before things get tougher. They have some curious losses with Phoenix (more understandable as the week continued) and the Lakers (poor execution on a night the Lakers didn’t play well). The Clippers also were lucky to take down Portland with Kawhi Leonard not playing. This team was made for a deep playoff run, but it needs to make sure things are fine-tuned by the second-round.

Los Angeles Lakers

  • Matchup to watch: LeBron vs. big wings

One ongoing storyline this season has been LeBron James' struggles against some of the league's elite defenses. The Clippers, Bucks, Raptors, Celtics and 76ers all have long, athletic wings to throw at James, and his effective field goal percentage drops from 55% to 48% against those teams. He's not able to isolate nearly as efficiently, with his points per iso chance falling from 1.04 (well above league average) to 0.9 (not great) in these matchups, according to Second Spectrum data.

In his first two games in Florida, James averaged 18 points per game and shot 13-for-34 overall against the Clippers and Raptors. He bounced back against the Jazz, who are lacking perimeter depth. This is something to monitor as things progress.

re they in a good spot? The Lakers haven’t been good in Orlando. I would even argue they didn’t play that well in the first night win over the Clippers. They can’t make shots and the defense isn’t what you’d like it to be. They also don’t need to be good right now. Frank Vogel has the opportunity to make sure his stars don’t get overextended while also seeing whether guys like Dion Waiters, JR Smith, Alex Caruso and Talen Horton-Tucker deserve heavy rotation spots in the postseason. Only thing they have to play for is end of rotation minutes and health right now. But we still have to overreact to the bubble wins and losses.

Memphis Grizzlies

  • Leaguewide chatter: Young Grizzlies feeling growing pains

Scouts who have watched the Grizzlies play in the bubble are unanimous in saying that while Memphis has a bright future, its late-game execution issues should be expected of such a young team. After entering Orlando with a 3½-game lead for the No. 8 playoff seed in the Western Conference, the Grizzlies have suffered three tough losses while dropping each fourth quarter.

"They shouldn't have lost either of those [first two], and found ways to do it by being a disaster at the end of the game," one scout said. "It isn't super shocking when you watch those two games that the team with Damian Lillard and DeMar DeRozan won."

Things went from bad to worse Tuesday when Jaren Jackson Jr. — one of the best young big men in the NBA — was ruled out for the rest of the season with a meniscus tear in his left knee. What already was going to be a challenge for Memphis to make the playoffs just got that much harder.

re they in a good spot? If it weren’t for the Memphis Grizzlies’ win over OKC, they would be written off right now. They’ve lost tough game after tough game, on top of losing Jaren Jackson Jr. to a knee injury. They’re playing with house money at this point in the season, but it doesn’t mean they don’t want to make the playoffs. Ja Morant has been spectacular and the Grizzlies have been a great story. However, the bubble has been a disaster for them. They’re barely surviving it right now, and I’m not sure how you can feel good about their chances in a play-in tournament if they fall to the 9-seed.

Miami Heat

As the Heat moved through their season with Leonard getting spot minutes (and, to be fair, making a high percentage of his 3s), opposing scouts wondered when coach Erik Spoelstra would move away from that lineup. Putting another wing on the court would allow budding star Bam Adebayo to play center full time.

Well, Spoelstra kicked off the seeding games by starting Jae Crowder and not playing Leonard at all. It's a welcome decision, as it makes Miami far more versatile defensively. And getting ahead of the change now is wise. The new starting lineup of Crowder, Adebayo, Jimmy ButlerDuncan Robinson and Kendrick Nunn had played only 24 minutes before the restart, so the group could use the time to jell.

It's better to make this kind of move now rather than when many coaches do it: after a loss in a playoff series.

re they in a good spot? Terrible week for the Heat. The loss to Toronto was bad. Even without Jimmy Butler, getting smoked by the Bucks in a game you held a 20-point lead didn’t feel good. Then Phoenix controlling an entire game (even again without Butler) isn’t the way the Heat wanted to handle this stretch. As long as Butler is healthy coming up in the next week, the Heat will look at all of this as a positive. They’ve gotten some great minutes from the trade deadline acquisitions, and the young guys are learning in higher pressure situations. Miami suffers in the rankings this week, but still feels good about most everything that isn’t related to protecting the rim.

Milwaukee Bucks

  • Leaguewide chatter: Will hot 3-point teams take advantage?

It probably isn't fair given how well Milwaukee has played this season, but some league insiders questioned the Bucks' championship potential after their late-game execution in Sunday's loss to the Rockets. One scout is particularly dialed in on how Milwaukee's defensive scheme — hyperfocused on walling off the paint and allowing teams to fire away from 3 — will work deep in the postseason.

"I'm interested to see if the way they play defense [holds up]," the scout said. "The further they can get, and play good teams that can actually shoot — will it come back to bite them?"

This is a fascinating trend, as two of the league's top three defenses (Milwaukee and Toronto) allow the most 3-point attempts per 100 possessions. Milwaukee has allowed opponents to make 20 or more 3s in a game six times, including Brooklyn on Tuesday. That's the second most ever in a season, trailing only this season's Golden State Warriors (with seven), per ESPN Stats & Information research.

Even if these looks are well contested, the strategy might go boom or bust in a seven-game series.

Wins and losses this week: Nets (L), Heat (W), Mavericks (L)

Are they in a good spot? Yes and no. There’s something bizarre going on with the Milwaukee Bucks right now, and it was actually happening some prior to the shutdown in March. The Bucks have been one of the most historically dominant teams in NBA history, and yet a lot of the teams looking to take them down don’t seem to fear the deer at all. In fact, Miami, Toronto and Boston seem to want a piece of the Bucks. A few things have been exposed in the bubble, but the Bucks aren’t worried about needing to adjust or just better execute late game and defense stuff when the playoffs hit. I’m just not sure I remember a team this dominant in the regular season, whom the rest of their key opponents don’t fear. Maybe that will bite the teams in their way soon enough.

Oklahoma City Thunder

  • Big development: The arrival of SGA

Over the past few weeks, the consistent word coming out of Oklahoma City was that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had taken a leap during the hiatus. Through the first two games in the bubble, he has backed that up.

SGA is averaging 21.5 PPG with an effective field goal percentage of 58%. Physically, he even looks like a more powerful and stronger guard. The combination of Gilgeous-Alexander, Chris Paul and Dennis Schroder will make life difficult for whomever the Thunder face in the playoffs. Right now, BPI projects the Nuggets and Rockets as their most likely opponents.

re they in a good spot? The loss to the Grizzlies wasn’t good, but the win over the Lakers was great. The Thunder have earned the respect of the league, pundits and fans of the NBA all season long. They went from not being taken seriously in the preseason to possessing the tag of “team nobody wants to face.” They still have questions for the perimeter outside of their three main guards, but the Thunder have continued their strong play in the bubble. It will be interesting to see how they handle these final three games of the seeding stretch. Do they want to face Houston? Do they want to fall to 6 to match up with Denver? Or do the Thunder want to find a way to get a shot at Utah?

MORE: How the NBA picked the barbers for the bubble

Orlando Magic

  • Offseason implications: Is Mo Bamba a bust?

Bamba didn't get off the bench until the final six minutes of Orlando's first two games. Khem Birch, a 27-year-old journeyman, is playing ahead of him, and there is no indication that's going to change.

It was hard to watch Bamba amble onto the court for those final few minutes and think about how much different things would be for the Magic with a different break in the 2018 NBA draft. Here are three players who went ahead of Bamba (No. 6): Luka Doncic, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Trae Young. Taken right after him? Wendell Carter Jr. Taken later in the lottery? Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Michael Porter Jr.

Put any one of those six players on Orlando's roster and both the present and the future are much brighter. Instead, the Magic remain on the treadmill of mediocrity and without many options to meaningfully improve this summer.

Are they in a good spot? After this week? No. The Magic had a brutal schedule this week, but they couldn’t pull out one single victory. Now they’ve managed to lock themselves into the 8-seed when they should have taken advantage of an incomplete Nets roster to jump ahead of Brooklyn. The injuries to Jonathan Isaac and to a lesser extent Aaron Gordon have taken huge players out of their rotation. Gordon could end up being fine for the playoffs with his hamstring, but the Magic went from looking great early in the bubble to crashing back down to earth.

Philadelphia 76ers

  • Big development: The Horford-Embiid combo … is working?

While Al Horford has been dropped from the starting lineup in favor of Shake Milton, the combination of Joel Embiid and Horford on the court through the first two games has been much better than it was in the regular season. In 26 minutes against the Pacers and Spurs, Embiid and Horford are plus-6.2 per 100 possessions after being a minus-1.3 before the restart.

Being able to play well with both bigs on the court would be huge for the Sixers in a playoff series against any of the East's top teams.

Are they in a good spot? Oh god no. Things look pretty bad right now after news that Ben Simmons will undergo surgery. The Philadelphia 76ers aren’t saying he’s out for the season because a deep playoff run could give him time to get back to the court. But without Simmons on the floor, the idea of a deep playoff run doesn’t feel very likely. For all of the hand-wringing over his faults (and it’s valid), he’s still a monster playmaker, who can play a bunch of positions and also happens to be one of the best defenders in the league.

Portland Trail Blazers

  • Big development: Jusuf Nurkic looks fantastic

The early returns on Nurkic after his 18-month absence following a gruesome leg injury have been fantastic for Portland. Nurkic has shown up looking like he never left, reestablishing his pick-and-roll chemistry with Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum while moving well around the court.

However their time in the bubble ends, the Blazers can go into the offseason knowing they can count on Nurkic moving forward, which is huge for them.

MORE: What Nurkic gained from losing a year to injury

W)

Are they in a good spot? Despite two almost unbelievable clutch free throw misses from Damian Lillard, the Portland Trail Blazers are still in great shape. The return of Jusuf Nurkic and Zach Collins, along with the extended role for Gary Trent Jr., have transformed what was once a pretty anemic Blazers rotation. Now Lillard and CJ McCollum have a ton of help on both ends of the floor, allowing them to focus on carrying the offensive load. They have players who can counter adjustments by the defense, which they didn’t really have before. It was either Dame and CJ are superheroes, or they lose. And sometimes the superhero thing didn’t bring wins. Carmelo Anthony hitting clutch shots just makes them look so ready to snag the 8-seed.

Toronto Raptors

  • Overhead: FVV's unexpected athleticism

Fred VanVleet sliced up the Heat on Monday afternoon, scoring a career-high 36 points and snatching the game-winning steal. Raptors coach Nick Nurse praised VanVleet's surprising athleticism, and how it powers his game, quite well afterward:

"I think what makes it unique is this, he doesn't look very fast out there, right?" Nurse said. "He doesn't move up and down the court that fast, but his lateral side-to-side speed and the way he can move his feet is incredible. And it's deceiving because you're kind of seeing him bring the ball up the floor, running up the floor or whatever, and you think, well, he's not that athletic or fast or quick or anything, but his side-to-side athleticism is outstanding. That's why he can get into the ball, and he can kind of use his torso to stay in front of people."

VanVleet will be a free agent in October and is expected to get a significant raise from his current $9.3 million salary.

Toronto Raptors (Previously 1st), 50-19 (+6.1 net rating)

Wins and losses this week: Heat (W), Magic (W), Celtics (L), Grizzlies (W)

Are they in a good spot? Despite the Boston Celtics demolishing them this week, the Toronto Raptors are in a great spot. The Raptors continue to build momentum from a conversation standpoint when it comes to the team that might represent the Eastern Conference when it comes to the NBA Finals in the bubble. The defending champions are no longer doubted. Their coach has beyond proven himself in his second season (which is easier to do when you won the championship in your first season). The remaining players from the title run over a year ago are locked in and never seem to panic. They present tons of problems for Milwaukee, Miami and the lot. However, as confident as this team is, there are plenty of people wondering if they match up well enough with Boston. That’s a problem when they face the Celtics in the second round.

MORE: Start considering the Raptors real NBA title contenders

Utah Jazz

  • Leaguewide chatter: This second unit is ugly

Losing Bojan Bogdanovic to season-ending surgery was always going to be a difficult thing for the Jazz to overcome. But it hasn't been helped by some truly rough play from their bench players inside the bubble.

Joe Ingles shifting into the starting lineup means Jordan Clarkson needs to produce. Instead, he has shot a dreadful 6-for-30 in the past two games with a … minus-50.3 on/off rating in Florida (oof). Georges Niang and Emmanuel Mudiay haven't been any better, either. For Utah to turn things around, the Jazz will need their second unit to start to pick it up.

re they in a good spot? The Utah Jazz are not in a good spot. This bubble stretch has been a disaster for them. Their only wins came against New Orleans (bounced early) and Memphis, who might free fall out of the 8-seed. They lost to the Spurs because they sat most everybody, and they fought valiantly but still couldn’t execute enough against Denver. The biggest problem facing Utah is its defense just isn’t its calling card anymore. It should be. They should still be able to defend at elite levels regularly. But the Jazz have let that slip and I’m not sure how they get it back in time for the postseason.

(BY DEFAULT)
