Douglas Richard Flutie<\/b> (born October 23, 1962) is a former quarterback<\/a> in the National Football League<\/a> (NFL), Canadian Football League<\/a> (CFL), and United States Football League<\/a> (USFL). He first rose to prominence during his college football<\/a>career at Boston College<\/a>, where he received the Heisman Trophy<\/a> and the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award<\/a> in 1984. His "Hail Flutie<\/a>" touchdown<\/a> pass in a game against Miami<\/a> on November 23, 1984 (dubbed "The Pass<\/a>"[1]<\/a><\/sup>[2]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup>) is considered among the greatest moments in college football<\/a> and American sports history.[4]<\/a><\/sup> Flutie was selected as the 285th pick in the 11th round of the 1985 NFL Draft<\/a> by the Los Angeles Rams<\/a> (even though Flutie had already signed a 5-year $5+mil contract with the Generals[5]<\/a><\/sup>), making him the lowest drafted Heisman Award winner among those who were drafted. Flutie played that year for the New Jersey Generals<\/a> of the upstart USFL. Flutie signed with the BC Lions<\/a> of the CFL in 1990, and in 1991, threw for a record 6,619 yards. He played briefly with his brother Darren<\/a>, a wide receiver<\/a>, before being traded to the Calgary Stampeders<\/a>, whom he led to victory in the 1992 Grey Cup<\/a>. In 1994, he threw a record 48 touchdown passes. Flutie played for the Stampeders until 1996, when he signed with theToronto Argonauts<\/a>, leading them to back-to-back Grey Cup victories in 1996 and 1997. Flutie was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player<\/a> a record six times, and was named the MVP<\/a> in all three of his Grey Cup victories.<\/p>\n

He returned to the NFL in 1998 with the Buffalo Bills<\/a>, where he earned Pro Bowl<\/a> and NFL Comeback Player of the Year<\/a>honors. He played for the San Diego Chargers<\/a> from 2001 to 2004, and finished his career as a member of the New England Patriots<\/a> in 2005. In 2006, he was ranked No. 1 in a list of the top 50 CFL players<\/a>. He was named to the College Football Hall of Fame<\/a> and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame<\/a> in 2007.<\/p>\n
