In order to contain Kyrie Irving and Kyle Lowry, however, Team Rest of the World needs a good defender manning the position. That's why Rubio, one of the best in the NBA on that end, gets the nod as a starter.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph5\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Rubio's poor shooting could be a problem on offense, but he improved in that area last year before a dip in April. His great ball handling and court vision will also help when trying to break down a stingy Team USA pressure defense.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"L49M24\">Shooting guard: Manu Ginobili (Argentina, Spurs)<\/h4>\n<p id=\"paragraph6\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Even at 39 years old, Manu remains a good marksman and playmaker who shot 39 percent from beyond the arc and averaged over five assists per 36 minutes during his most recent NBA season. Any team hoping to hang with the U.S. needs several ball handlers who can create for themselves when things go sour. Manu can still do that.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph7\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">He's also had tremendous success at the FIBA level, including two victories over Team USA way back in 2002 and 2004. He might not be a star anymore, but his experience and leadership should help keep his teammates focused.<\/p>\n<div id=\"SLh3AT\">\n<div class=\"p-scalable-video\" data-ref-message=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/2016\/8\/2\/12315436\/could-a-team-full-of-the-best-non-u-s-basketball-players-even-compete-with-team-usa-in-rio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SqDAyVDpB90\" width=\"425\" height=\"425\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4 id=\"OKwXsB\">Small forward: Nicolas Batum (France, Hornets)<\/h4>\n<p id=\"paragraph8\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Team Rest of the World\u2019s small forward would need to be able to contribute in every area. Batum is more than capable of doing that, as his 15 points, six rebounds and six assists in leading the Hornets to the playoffs last season proved. He's also an experienced international competitor who nevertheless brings athleticism on the perimeter.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph9\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Despite having the necessary tools, Batum never emerged as a truly elite defender, which could be a problem since he would be tasked with guarding Kevin Durant. The hope is that his length and mobility would be enough to at least make things hard for Team USA's best player.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"0dXWqJ\">Power forward: Dario Saric (Croatia, 76ers)<\/h4>\n<p id=\"paragraph10\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">We originally had Portland\u2019s Al-Farouq Aminu (Nigeria) in this spot, but Aminu was a late scratch from the Olympics <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blazersedge.com\/2016\/7\/31\/12340086\/al-farouq-aminu-to-sit-out-2016-rio-olympics\" data-ref-index=\"4\">due to an insurance issue<\/a>. Therefore, Saric takes his starting place. Youth will be served.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph11\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Versatility at the forward spots is a must. Saric is 6'10, can shoot, handle the ball and rebound. He's exactly the type of combo forward who could replicate some of what Carmelo Anthony gives Team USA as a power forward, while also being able to play some small forward if needed.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"tIlYJD\">Center: Pau Gasol (Spain, Spurs)<\/h4>\n<p id=\"paragraph12\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Gasol is the first option on offense. His ability to score from inside and out could give DeAndre Jordan fits, while his passing could create open looks for his teammates. He's also very experienced at the FIBA level and has come as close as anyone in the past few years to beating Team USA with the Spanish national team.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph13\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">He doesn't have great mobility on defense, but he could stay in the lane most of the time, where his length allows him to be a good rim protector. If his brother were not hurt he would likely be the starting center, but he's out. Therefore, Pau gets the nod.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"LR8eh4\">Bench<\/h2>\n<h4 id=\"vFa8KN\">Point guards: Patty Mills (Australia, Spurs)<\/h4>\n<p id=\"paragraph14\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">A Spurs point guard gets the back-up role, and it's not Tony Parker. Parker is still a productive player, but his skill set is not necessary on Team Rest of the World. Rubio, Manu and Batum can create, so bench guards need to be able to catch and shoot, as well as be a pest on defense. Neither is Parker\u2019s strength.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph15\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Mills, on the other hand, fits the bill in both areas. He's also experienced success at this level, as he led the London Olympics in scoring with Australia at over 21 per game.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"6ef533\">Milos Teodosic (Serbia, CSKA Moscow)<\/h4>\n<p id=\"paragraph16\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Serbian Pete Maravich also edges out Tony Parker for a spot, again because of his skill set. His clutch shooting and ability to go off in a moment's notice are more needed than Parker's steady hand. If Rubio and Manu struggle, Team Rest of the World can unleash Teodosic in the hopes that he fuels a run by himself.<\/p>\n<div id=\"olOO59\">\n<div class=\"p-scalable-video\" data-ref-message=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/2016\/8\/2\/12315436\/could-a-team-full-of-the-best-non-u-s-basketball-players-even-compete-with-team-usa-in-rio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ETLtA8E9tjI\" width=\"427\" height=\"427\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4 id=\"PCTXaG\">Bojan Bogdanovic (Croatia, Nets)<\/h4>\n<p id=\"paragraph17\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Either Bogdanovic \u2014 Croatia's Bojan or Serbia's Bogdan \u2014 would have been a good pick, but the Nets' sniper gets the nod because he's better at playing off the ball. If the spacing gets crammed or the inconsistent Batum is not hitting shots, Bogdanovic can check in and hopefully make some buckets from beyond the arc.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"7BSiC3\">Boris Diaw (France, Jazz)<\/h4>\n<p id=\"paragraph18\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Diaw is like a fully realized version of Saric. He had a down season last year with the Spurs and is aging, but he's still one of the most versatile players in the world. He can punish smaller defenders in the post, hit outside shots if he's left open and will keep the ball moving. It was tempting to go with FIBA legend Luis Scola at this spot, but his defense is a concern.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph19\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong>Nikola Mirotic (Bulls, Spain)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph20\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Mirotic had a down year in the NBA with the Bulls, but his ability to spread the floor with his jumper and ability to attack closeouts makes him a useful bench player for Team Rest of the World. There are a few other traditional big men that may be better or more exciting players, but Mirotic slides in here because of his skill set.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"ZUt8qk\">Jonas Valanciunas (Lithuania, Raptors)<\/h4>\n<p id=\"paragraph21\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Choosing between Valnaciunas and Serbia\u2019s Nikola Jokic was hard, but JV showed flashes of breaking out last postseason, destroying Hassan Whiteside inside before injuring his ankle. If he's playing at that level, he might even replace Pau in the starting lineup.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph22\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">Just keep him away from DeMarcus Cousins.<\/p>\n<div id=\"QwPoST\">\n<div class=\"p-scalable-video vine\" data-ref-message=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/2016\/8\/2\/12315436\/could-a-team-full-of-the-best-non-u-s-basketball-players-even-compete-with-team-usa-in-rio\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\" pinged loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/vine.co\/v\/OzLQ3wAWP0Z\/embed\/simple\" width=\"409\" height=\"409\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4 id=\"FAL6uU\">Rudy Gobert (Jazz, France)<\/h4>\n<p id=\"paragraph23\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\">If Team USA's athleticism gets too overwhelming for Diaw, Valanciunas and Gasol, Gobert is there to check in and protect the rim. Brussino was signed by the Mavericks in the summer after putting up 14.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists\u00a0per game last season in Argentina\u2019s Liga Nacional de B\u00e1squet, the country\u2019s top league.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph5\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/21775\/manu-ginobili\" data-ref-index=\"8\">Manu Ginobili<\/a><\/strong><strong> (<\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/teams\/san-antonio-spurs\" data-ref-index=\"9\">Spurs<\/a><\/strong><strong>): <\/strong>The Argentinian legend returns to the Olympics for the fourth time. Ginobili, 39, was one of the leaders of the Argentinian team that took home gold at the 2002 World Championships and 2004 Olympics.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph6\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/24219\/luis-scola\" data-ref-index=\"10\">Luis Scola<\/a><\/strong><strong> (<\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/teams\/brooklyn-nets\" data-ref-index=\"11\">Nets<\/a><\/strong><strong>): <\/strong>He and Ginobili are the last two men standing from those gold medal squads. This will be Scola\u2019s fourth Olympics.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph7\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong>Patricio Garino (Spurs): <\/strong>Another young player making his Olympic debut, Garino<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poundingtherock.com\/2016\/7\/30\/12333112\/spurs-sign-patricio-garino-to-2-year-deal\" data-ref-index=\"12\">recently signed with San Antonio<\/a> after representing the Magic in the Summer League. You might be familiar with him, as he played the past four seasons in college at George Washington.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"ZPqcBc\">Out<\/h4>\n<p id=\"paragraph8\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong>Pablo Prigioni (Rockets): <\/strong>Back in March, Prigioni announced on Twitter that he was<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PPrigioni9\/status\/714749868066078720\" data-ref-index=\"13\">pulling himself from consideration <\/a>for Rio.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"6BQH63\">Australia<\/h1>\n<h3 id=\"dtYTjY\">In<\/h3>\n<p id=\"paragraph9\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/89186\/aron-baynes\" data-ref-index=\"14\">Aron Baynes<\/a><\/strong><strong> (<\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/teams\/detroit-pistons\" data-ref-index=\"15\">Pistons<\/a><\/strong><strong>):<\/strong> This will be the 29-year-old Baynes\u2019 second Olympics. The Pistons\u2019 big man is coming off a solid season as Andre Drummond\u2019s backup.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph10\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/21684\/andrew-bogut\" data-ref-index=\"16\">Andrew Bogut<\/a><\/strong><strong> (Mavericks):<\/strong> Fresh off being traded to Dallas to make room for Kevin Durant, Bogut is suiting up for his fourth Olympics.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph11\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/222859\/matthew-dellavedova\" data-ref-index=\"17\">Matthew Dellavedova<\/a><\/strong><strong> (<\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/teams\/milwaukee-bucks\" data-ref-index=\"18\">Bucks<\/a><\/strong><strong>):<\/strong> He\u2019s won an NBA championship and signed a four-year, $38 million deal with Milwaukee this summer. Any accolades he adds on during the Olympics will be gravy. That includes <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/traread\/status\/758117853245546496\" data-ref-index=\"19\">this dagger<\/a> to defeat Argentina in a warm-up exhibition.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph12\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/251424\/joe-ingles\" data-ref-index=\"20\">Joe Ingles<\/a><\/strong><strong> (<\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/teams\/utah-jazz\" data-ref-index=\"21\">Jazz<\/a><\/strong><strong>): <\/strong>The 28-year-old swingman averaged four points in 15 minutes per game last year for Utah.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph13\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/71950\/patty-mills\" data-ref-index=\"22\">Patty Mills<\/a><\/strong><strong> (Spurs):<\/strong> Mills averaged a tournament-high 21.2 points per game during the 2012 Beijing Olympics.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"dDXbeV\">Out<\/h3>\n<p id=\"paragraph14\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/246134\/dante-exum\" data-ref-index=\"23\">Dante Exum<\/a><\/strong><strong> (Jazz):<\/strong> The young Utah point guard averaged just 2.7 points per game during the 2014 FIBA World Championships. He\u2019s also still making his way back from a torn ACL he suffered in August 2015.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph15\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/276633\/ben-simmons\" data-ref-index=\"24\">Ben Simmons<\/a><\/strong><strong> (Sixers):<\/strong> The 2016 No. 1 pick decided to pass on the Olympics so that he could focus on preparing for his rookie season.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"LwX8zI\">Brazil<\/h1>\n<h3 id=\"cjvtiL\">In<\/h3>\n<p id=\"paragraph16\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/21912\/leandro-barbosa\" data-ref-index=\"25\">Leandro Barbosa<\/a><\/strong><strong> (<\/strong><strong>Suns<\/strong><strong>):<\/strong> The 33-year-old guard signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Suns this offseason.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph17\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/21506\/nene-hilario\" data-ref-index=\"26\">Nene<\/a><\/strong><strong> (<\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/teams\/houston-rockets\" data-ref-index=\"27\">Rockets<\/a><\/strong><strong>):<\/strong> Nene also signed with a new team this offseason. It will be up to him and Barbosa to carry the scoring load for Brazil as they try to medal at home.<\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph18\" class=\"pgh-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/players\/257658\/marcelo-huertas\" data-ref-index=\"28\">Marcelo Huertas<\/a><\/strong><strong> (<\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nba\/teams\/los-angeles-lakers\" data-ref-index=\"29\">Lakers<\/a><\/strong><strong>):<\/strong> This will be Huertas\u2019 second time playing in the Olympics.
