The Spurs have not made big changes on their roster but Gregg Popovich will make sure they are not the same team as last season.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Spurs<\/a>\u00a0have always had a duality to them. They are traditional but innovative, predictable in some ways but not in others. "The same old Spurs" description so many throw at them is apt in that you can count on them to be consistently good, to play disciplined basketball, and to be coy with the press. But over the years their style of play has changed dramatically and, while their core remains the same, the rest of the roster has undergone significant changes.<\/p>\n

That tension between continuity and evolution will be strong this season. The Spurs won the title in decisive fashion. There were two close series but the struggles against the Mavs seemed a product of fluky events and a perhaps overconfident team not showing the "appropriate fear" and what most people forget about the\u00a0Thunder<\/a>\u00a0series is that Ibaka wasn't the only injured star. In fact\u00a0Tony Parker<\/a>\u00a0was hobbled for most of the season, including the playoffs. Yet the Spurs finished with the top record in the league, came out of the West and demolished the\u00a0Heat<\/a>\u00a0in the Finals, playing some of the best basketball anyone has seen in years.<\/p>\n

So obviously the temptation is high to avoid fixing what's not broken.<\/p>\n

That explains why the team brought everyone back, something no championship team has done since the\u00a0Chicago Bulls<\/a>\u00a0in 1991<\/a>. Here's\u00a0how Pop explained the decision<\/a>: "Uh … well … we had a pretty good year so … I didn't see any reason to kick them out of town or make trades or changes. Plus most of them were under contract, and that makes it more difficult. It's a pretty good crew and they'll all come back and as usual they'll do their best and we'll either lose in the first round, second round, conference finals or win it all, who knows?"<\/p>\n

The phrase "a pretty good year" is the current front-runner for Understatement of the Year. Pop is obviously being careful not to succumb to hubris, but he and the rest of the league knows that if the Spurs can play as they did last season, they are the team to beat, the favorites. The Spurs didn't need a complete overhaul like the Cavs' underwent — or even the rotation tweaks of the\u00a0Clippers<\/a>\u00a0and Thunder — because they know how good they can be with what they have. Staying the course was obviously an easy decision.<\/p>\n

That's why it was a little strange to read what Pop told the media\u00a0as transcribed in this must-read Washington Post piece by\u00a0<\/a>Michael Lee<\/a>: "You got to keep up with it, because teams change, players' careers change and the makeup of the team changes. Standing pat never works." That mantra largely contradicts what the franchise did this off-season. The makeup of the team hasn't changed at all and the only real change I can envision happening from day one will be come because\u00a0Patty Mills<\/a>\u00a0is recovering from rotator cuff surgery. If standing pat never works then why have the Spurs gone with\u00a0the most extreme example of continuity in years while their opponents have made significant changes?<\/p>\n

That apparent contradiction disappears when we understand the quote in the context Pop provided it: standing pat is a mindset, not anything quantifiable like roster changes.<\/p>\n

Everybody knows complacency (and health, of course) could be as big a threat to a Spurs repeat as OKC or Cleveland. \u00a0"They are human beings. They are going to feel satisfied,"\u00a0said Pop<\/a>, and I can't help to think that he's talking about himself as well. Everyone, including – or especially – Pop need new challenges or else they are susceptible to contentment, to resting on their laurels. And even in a season in which he could simply be on cruise control after building and keeping together a team that plays exactly the way he taught them to, he will find those challenges.<\/p>\n

The Spurs have made two big additions this summer: Becky Hammon and Ettore Messina. Hammon is pioneer but also a rookie coach in need of a mentor. And Messina is a seasoned veteran of the sidelines and,\u00a0according to Pop<\/a>, is bringing innovation to the playbook already: "In our preparation for the season he's seen the way we do things and we do this and we do that and he's said \u2018Have you thought about this?' and I already like some of the suggestions that he's made that we'll change." Pop has never been shy about adding plays or changing philosophies and having new eyes looking at the way things are run could result in subtle but meaningful tweaks. Does the team need that? Probably not. But if you can get better there's no reason not to try to.<\/p>\n

To the casual observer, the Spurs will look the same next season. With any luck they will also have similar success. But the faithful have seen just how much experimentation was necessary to achieve this identity the Spurs now have and, knowing the architect behind it, will expect even more. Even if it's still probably not necessary to start featuring\u00a0Kawhi Leonard<\/a>\u00a0in the offense more prominently yet, Pop will try to find ways. He will continue to try to untangle the riddle within an enigma that isBoris Diaw<\/a>\u00a0instead of settling for the glimpse he got last season. And he will even try to figure out just how good the deep bench guys can be, even though they will not sniff the court in the post-season and won't be Spurs next year. Failing to do so would be standing pat and we already know how Pop feels about that.<\/p>\n

This upcoming season the entire roster will be the same. The same coach will roam the sidelines as the same owner and general manager watch from the stands. We'll see the same defensive schemes and largely the same offensive plays. The Spurs will continue to have an identity as an unselfish team that moves the ball with precision and, provided there's no great injury, even the minutes distribution come playoffs time will be similar. But to interpret that as the Spurs being the same will be a mistake. The franchise, with Pop as its engine, is always in flux, always in motion even if it takes a more nuanced observation to see the wheels turning than it does on teams that constantly change names on and off the court.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

. If a team\u2019s starting five was always made up of its best five players, there would be little to debate. Creating the optimal starting five (and by extension the optimal rotation) isn\u2019t that simple though, and there are several reasons as to why starting Thompson at center could make sense for the Cavaliers.As Cavaliers General Manager has stated more times than one can count, fit is an extremely important part of building a successful basketball team. It\u2019s also one of the reasons why Tristan Thompson may be the better fit at center. First of all, Thompson is nowhere near the passer that Varejao is, and he also doesn\u2019t have Andy\u2019s handle. Because of this, it would likely benefit him to play most of his minutes with the rest of the starting lineup, all of whom are above average passers and shot creators, especially considering Thompson\u2019s struggles with creating good shots for himself. There is also an old saying about passing being contagious and that may be true for the Cavaliers in general and Thompson in particular. After averaging an acceptable 1.3 assists per game in his second year, Thompson slipped to just 0.9 assists per game last season. This may have been due to a change in his own approach or former coach Mike Brown\u2019s offensive schemes, but it\u2019s fairly easy to see Thompson\u2019s assist totals climbing again in David Blatt\u2019s offense, which places a heavy emphasis on ball movement.Another advantage is Tristan Thompson\u2019s strength of scoring in transition. This is the one area of his game that is truly stronger than Varejao\u2019s. According to Synergy Sports, Thompson ranked in the 87th percentile of the league (32nd overall to be exact) on scoring in transition plays last season, making 66.7 percent of his shot attempts in transition. It is often mentioned how Kevin Love\u2019s terrific outlet passes will help James, Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters in transition, but don\u2019t forget about Thompson. His skill in transition combined with the fact that he is simply faster than most other centers will give him a chance to get a couple of easy baskets every game. While Varejao is a solid transition player as well, he simply cannot match Thompson\u2019s speed and explosiveness at this point in his career. Thompson is also far more durable than Varejao, having played in every game over the last two years. Making him the starting center may also help the continuity of this lineup, as he is fairly likely to be available for every game.The final advantage to starting Tristan Thompson may be on the defensive end. While there is no doubt that Varejao is a better defender and was a bit better at protecting the rim last year, Thompson has shown more potential as a shot-blocker. Thompson was a terrific shot-blocker in college, averaging 2.4 blocks per game during his lone season at Texas. Typically blocks, along with rebounds and steals, is a statistic that translates well from college to the NBA, but in Thompson\u2019s case that hasn\u2019t happened. After averaging a solid 1.6 blocks per 36 minutes during his rookie year, Thompson\u2019s averages over the same time have dropped to 1.0 and then 0.5 over the last two years. While this could have been due to added muscle sapping his athleticism somewhat or the defensive schemes of his coaches, the more likely answer is the position Thompson has played. During his rookie year Thompson originally came off the bench behind fellow power forward Antawn Jamison. However, a season-ending injury to Anderson Varejao, and ineffective play by backup centers Samardo Samuels and Ryan Hollins, forced Thompson to become the starting center for the latter part of the season. Because of this he was usually playing close to the basket on defense. While he has played some center over the past two years, Thompson has spent the vast majority of his time at power forward and has typically had to play a bit farther from the basket on defense due to the amount of stretch fours seen in today\u2019s NBA. Thompson is already a solid pick-and-roll defender, and playing the majority of his time at center may allow him to regain his shot-blocking form and become the rim protector many thought he could be coming out of college. When you also take into account the muscle he added this offseason, and the fact that his 7\u20191\u201d wingspan and 9\u20190\u201d standing reach help negate his relative lack of height at 6\u20199\u201d, the case could be made that Tristan Thompson will be more effective as an undersized center than he ever would be as a power forward in today\u2019s NBA.<\/article>\n

Another plus would be the passing Varejao would bring to the second unit. The bench players likely to be in the rotation besides Varejao or Thompson are Shawn Marion, Mike Miller, Matthew Dellavedova and (in certain scenarios) Brendan Haywood. While these are all high I.Q. players, none of them besides Dellavedova are known for their passing. Meanwhile Varejao had the\u00a0third highest assist ratio\u00a0<\/a>for centers in the league last season. This isn\u2019t hockey, and it\u2019s unlikely they will all be on the floor together at once, but having a member of the bench who can help with ball movement when the starters are out is critical. Finally, coming off the bench may allow Varejao to play a bit more power forward after primarily manning the center position for the last few years. While he is\u00a0better at center<\/a>\u00a0on both ends of the floor, a little less banging down low may also help to keep him healthy.<\/p>\n

So Curry on Tuesday drew the Chris Paul assignment that Mark Jackson used to gave to Klay Thompson. It did not go well for Curry, who fouled out in 18 minutes.<\/p>\n

"First of all, we didn't care," Kerr said. "We were only planning on playing him 20 minutes anyway. We would have taken him out a lot earlier, when he had the foul trouble. Secondly, we kept him on Chris Paul the whole time, which we wanted to do just to get a look at it."<\/p>\n

Part of Jackson's logic for shielding Curry from potent offensive players was to keep him on the floor, rightfully believing the Warriors would suffer greatly with their All-Star bound to the bench with foul trouble.<\/p>\n

But Curry wants the challenge. And Kerr believes the Warriors are deep enough, and will have enough variation in their offense, to at least attempt the experiment.<\/p>\n

\nKerr's predecessor, Mark Jackson, tended to substitute in units. The new coach ran players in and out at a dizzying rate that surely will make it tougher on opponents.<\/p>\n

Then again, his goal on Tuesday was to play a lot of people. He played 14 men.<\/p>\n

There was Curry, sharing the floor with four reserves. There was Andre Iguodala, sharing the floor with four reserves. There was the starting lineup back on the floor, with one exception: Draymond Green for David Lee.<\/p>\n

Those two basically share the mindset that the new media-rights deal means the current CBA should be torn up, with Durant going as far as to say max deals shouldn\u2019t exist anymore. Dallas Mavericks owner\u00a0Mark Cuban<\/strong>\u00a0explained before last night\u2019s Rockets-Mavs game how making such a move could have far-reaching repercussions, writes ourJeff Caplan<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you give up guarantees,\u201d Cuban said. \u201cIt\u2019s a trade-off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant suggested there should no longer be a restriction on how much the league\u2019s top talent can earn because those players generate significant revenue and can\u2019t be paid what they\u2019re worth under the current collective bargaining agreement.<\/p>\n

Durant, who can become a free agent in 2016, made the suggestion to do away with max deals in the wake of the NBA announcing a nine-year TV and digital rights extension that the New York Times reported is worth $2.66 billion annually.<\/p>\n

Cuban said owners discussed doing away with max contracts during labor negotiations in 2011 and would be willing to do so again, but players would have to be willing to give up fully guaranteed contracts. When an NBA player signs their contract, he is guaranteed the full amount even if he is eventually cut by the team or injured.<\/p>\n

Doing away with guaranteed contracts would move the NBA to more of an NFL model where guaranteed money is only a portion of the total stated value of the contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was discussed during the lockout time among owners, but never got anywhere. So it was just one of those trial balloons,\u201d Cuban said. \u201cI\u2019m not offering this as a negotiation, I\u2019m not suggesting it, all I\u2019m saying is that was something we discussed before, and max contracts are always big question, guarantees are always a big question. But we have two years before that\u2019s even an issue, so no point discussing it now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Durant, LeBron James and\u00a0Kobe Bryant<\/strong>\u00a0have been quick to point to the new TV deal, plus unprecedented sale prices of several franchises including the Los Angeles Clippers for $2 billion, as further evidence that team owners can no longer claim they\u2019re losing money.<\/p>\n

During the last negotiations, the league said 22 of the 30 teams were operating at a loss. The players eventually agreed to a CBA in which their take of the league\u2019s annual basketball-related income (BRI) was cut from 57 percent to 50 percent.<\/p>\n

Cuban, however, essentially told the players to slow down.<\/p>\n

But he likewise won\u2019t budge from his oft-recited claims that the Rockets \u2014 no matter what you think of their July dealings or how his critics in rival front offices see it \u2014 remain a top-five destination in the league that is home to two of the NBA\u2019s top 10 players.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are always going to be swinging big,\u201d Morey said. \u201cWe\u2019re only about trying to win championships and how to make that happen. We take big swings at things. Obviously, it worked out the last two summers, but the only way you can land a James Harden or a Dwight Howard is by taking big swings. Sometimes, you hit. Sometimes, you miss. Bosh chose to stay in Miami, but that\u2019s not always going to be the case.<\/p>\n
