They thought they would get a tough game Sunday, but were simply too good to let that happen.<\/p>\n<p>They finished at 58 percent from the field. They made 15 of 30 3-point attempts and had eight of their 12 players score in double figures.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I think the results were dominant, but we had spurts of dominance in a lot of games,&quot; U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said. &quot;And we had tough games and then all of a sudden we'd have a spurt and it looked like we dominated. Tonight we had like about a 35-minute spurt.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The Americans were supposed to have All-Star forwards Durant,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3449\/kevin-love\">Kevin Love<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3989\/blake-griffin\">Blake Griffin<\/a>, who all informed USA Basketball not long before the tournament that they would be unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>But Irving and Harden stuck around, and despite sending the youngest U.S. team since NBA players debuted in 1992, the Americans remained as dominant as ever.<\/p>\n<p>They have won 63 straight games &#8212; 45 in official FIBA events and 18 in exhibition play &#8212; and are automatically qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>James, Durant,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/1975\/carmelo-anthony\">Carmelo Anthony<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/2779\/chris-paul\">Chris Paul<\/a>\u00a0might want to return for that competition. And the second for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3456\/derrick-rose\">Derrick Rose<\/a>, who used this tournament as his return after missing most of the last two seasons following a pair of knee surgeries, along with Curry and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3005\/rudy-gay\">Rudy Gay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first medal for Serbia, which had been a part of Yugoslavia when it won five. The Yugoslavians had been the last repeat champions, winning in 1998 and 2002.<\/p>\n<p>The Serbians were only 2-3 in the group stage but then routed previously unbeaten Greece and Brazil before building a big lead and holding on for a 90-85 semifinal victory over France, which had beat them in the group stage and knocked out tournament co-favorite Spain in the quarters.<\/p>\n<p>Serbia carried that momentum into the early moments of this one. Using a fluid offense that produced layups and dunks, Serbia opened the biggest lead any team had against the U.S. in this tournament when Miroslav Raduljica's three-point play made it 15-7.<\/p>\n<p>That was wiped out in a minute, and Serbia's hopes of winning didn't last much longer.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don't think anything worked what we planned, but nevertheless I'm still happy with the effort that we put on the floor,&quot; Serbia coach Sasha Djordjevic said.<\/p>\n<p>Harden had a three-point play and a 3-pointer,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/4258\/demarcus-cousins\">DeMarcus Cousins<\/a>\u00a0tied it with a pair of free throws, and then Irving had a jumper, 3-pointer and layup to cap a 15-0 burst that made it 22-15.<\/p>\n<p>Irving hit a couple more 3s in an 11-0 run later in the quarter that provided a 35-19 cushion, and the Americans poured it on midway through the second in making it 56-30 after back-to-back 3s by Irving and Harden.<\/p>\n<p>France beat Lithuania 95-93 on Saturday for the bronze.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-slider\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/Article\">\n<article>\n<div>\n<section data-page=\"1\">\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-twttr-id=\"twttr-sandbox-0\">\n<p>There was never a doubt for the red, white and blue.<\/p>\n<p>Team USA destroyed Serbia in the 2014 FIBA World Cup final to the tune of 129-92.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/kyrie-irving\">Kyrie Irving<\/a>\u00a0led the way with 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 from downtown, while\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/james-harden\">James Harden<\/a>\u00a0added 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Irving was named the MVP for the World Cup, while\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/nba\">NBA<\/a>\u00a0on ESPN shared the entire all-tournament team:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" title=\"Embedded Tweet\" height=\"452\" width=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Nikola Kalinic and Nemanja Bjelica each scored 18 points for Serbia.<\/p>\n<p>The blowout victory in the championship game completed a World Cup where the Americans were never challenged. In fact, their closest winning margin in nine games was 21 points over Turkey in the group stage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/kenneth-faried\">Kenneth Faried<\/a>\u00a0commented on the notion that there was some doubt about this team heading into the World Cup, according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/olympics\/basketball\/story\/_\/id\/11526817\/2014-fiba-basketball-world-cup-us-pummels-serbia-win-gold-medal\" target=\"_blank\">The Associated Press<\/a>\u00a0(via ESPN.com):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It kind of was, again, a smack to our face, saying the U.S. was sending the B-team to go play in the World Cup. France ruined that by shocking Spain in the quarterfinals, and then Serbia knocked out France in the semis.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans would have none of the upset bug.<\/p>\n<p>However, it was Serbia that jumped out to an early eight-point lead in the first quarter. Perhaps Team USA expected to simply roll over Serbia just by showing up, which would explain the slow start. The Cavaliers point guard scored 15 early points and started 6-of-8 from the field and 3-of-3 from behind the three-point line. In fact, Irving hit four treys, Harden connected on three from distance, Klay Thompson had two from long range and Rudy Gay and<a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/stephen-curry\">Stephen Curry<\/a>\u00a0each hit one.<\/p>\n<p>In all, Team USA shot 11-of-16 from three-point range in the first half.<\/p>\n<p>Duncan offered up some solid advice for Serbia:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-8\" title=\"Embedded Tweet\" height=\"186\" width=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the barrage of perimeter shooting, Krzyzewski's squad had an overwhelming 67-41 lead at the half.<\/p>\n<p>Things didn't look much different in the third quarter. The United States' NBA superstars were hitting on all cylinders with their shots. It really wasn't even a fair matchup on paper.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans do deserve credit for coming out of the locker room with some intensity. The United States stretched its lead to more than 30 points midway through the third and eviscerated the Serbian defense. Zach Harper of CBS Sports thought Serbia should maybe change its defensive look:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-11\" title=\"Embedded Tweet\" height=\"162\" width=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While it was easy to criticize Serbia's defense, ESPN commentator Fran Fraschilla told Bleacher Report before the game that Krzyzewski deserved plenty of credit:\u00a0&quot;I'd be very surprised if Team USA, because of Coach K's influence, takes their eyes off the prize. There's less of a sense of entitlement among these NBA stars than there was eight or nine years ago.
