A full-time starter for only the second time in his six-year career, he was responsible for picking up the pieces from last season's 25-win nightmare and holding the fort until the franchise had time for a proper rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that explains why we missed all of those shattered expectations as\u00a0Dragic\u00a0and new backcourt mate Eric\u00a0Bledsoe\u00a0helped Phoenix explode out of the gate. Or how we slept on\u00a0Dragic's balancing act, refusing to lose control of the ship when\u00a0Bledsoe\u00a0went\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/10269880\/eric-bledsoe-phoenix-suns-needs-knee-surgery-indefinitely\">under the knife<\/a>\u00a0in early January.<\/p>\n<p>Well,\u00a0Dragic\u00a0isn't letting us sleep any longer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Waking Up the Basketball World<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By all accounts, Friday seemed like it would be a night off for the 27-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>He skipped morning\u00a0shootaround, was officially listed as a game-time decision and stressed the &quot;need to be 100 percent to play,&quot; which he admitted he wasn't, via Craig\u00a0Grialou\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/arizonasports.com\/41\/1706957\/Phoenix-Suns-Goran-Dragic-a-gametime-decision-vs-New-Orleans\">ArizonaSports.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The guard swapped his doctor's note for his sneakers, though, and masterfully guided the Suns to a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nba.com\/games\/20140228\/NOPPHX\/gameinfo.html?ls=slt\">116-104 win<\/a>\u00a0over the visiting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/new-orleans-pelicans\">New Orleans Pelicans<\/a>\u00a0with a career-high 40 points.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A high-volume contributor throughout this season,\u00a0Dragic\u00a0is now raising the decibels to a level impossible to ignore.\u00a0His 40-point outburst set a new personal best, something he's done three times over his last eight outings:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He has upped the ante since losing\u00a0Bledsoe, but he was turning heads before &quot;mini-LeBron&quot; even went down.<\/p>\n<p>Dragic\u00a0brought career averages of 9.5 points and 4.2 assists into this season and then promptly averaged 18.0 and 7.2, respectively, through the end of November. Two of the others are post players: Anthony Davis and<a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/blake-griffin\">Blake Griffin<\/a>. The remaining two are sitting No. 1 and No. 1A in the MVP race:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/kevin-durant\">Kevin Durant<\/a>\u00a0and LeBron James.<\/p>\n<p>Like those two MVP leaders,\u00a0Dragic\u00a0does more than just find his own offense. He makes players around him better, elevating the Suns from an offensive afterthought to the league's most lethal attack:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-1\" title=\"Embedded Tweet\" height=\"183\" width=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dragic, deservedly, finished his latest masterpiece among a shower of &quot;MVP!&quot; chants.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I never thought they would cheer that for me,\u201d\u00a0Dragic\u00a0said after the game, via Kevin Zimmerman of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/valleyofthesuns.com\/2014\/03\/01\/how-not-to-stop-goran-dragic-from-scoring-40-points\/\">ValleyOfTheSuns.com<\/a>. \u201cI heard that when I was here for Steve (Nash).&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The numbers say those chants should be coming even more.<\/p>\n<p>His on\/off splits paint him as indispensable. His on-court plus-7.6 net rating is the team's\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stats.nba.com\/teamOnOffSummary.html?TeamID=1610612756\">highest<\/a>. His off-court minus-5.6 mark is the Suns' lowest. In other words, his presence makes a difference of 13.2 points per 100 possessions for Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>That type of impact should be felt across the basketball landscape:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-2\" title=\"Embedded Tweet\" height=\"183\" width=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Suns coach Jeff\u00a0Hornacek\u00a0is right, with the latter part. All hoop fans\u00a0<em>should\u00a0<\/em>know\u00a0Dragic\u00a0at this point.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it feels like there's a disservice still being done,\u00a0a substantial gap between the amount of respect he deserves and what he's actually been given.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Perception Trailing Reality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this golden era of point guards, you could ask for someone's favorite floor general and get a dozen different answers. His offensive creativity, off-the-bus shooting range and drastically improved\u00a0playmaking\u00a0skills help separate him as the clear No. 2.<\/p>\n<p>Take Curry and Paul out of the equation, and suddenly it's not so easy to keep the rankings going.<\/p>\n<p>Kyrie\u00a0Irving might have the most talent, but his team has been a major disappointment.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/john-wall\">John Wall<\/a>\u00a0has taken another step in his development, but he's still plagued by an inconsistent jump shot. Tony Parker has been efficient, but Gregg Popovich's maintenance plan has almost pushed him under 30 minutes a night.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/russell-westbrook\">Russell Westbrook<\/a>\u00a0is still scraping off the rust from three knee surgeries since April.<\/p>\n<p>Are any of these players\u00a0<em>clearly<\/em>\u00a0ahead of\u00a0Dragic?<\/p>\n<p>Based on what they've done this season, I don't see how the answer could be yes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"poll-313907\">\n<div id=\"poll-ballot-313907\">\n<h4>Where do you have Dragic rated among NBA PGs?<\/h4>\n<div>\n<form id=\"poll-vote-form\" action=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/polls\/create\" method=\"post\"><label><input type=\"radio\" name=\"vote\" value=\"choice0\" \/>Top 5<\/label><label><input type=\"radio\" name=\"vote\" value=\"choice1\" \/>Top 6-10<\/label><label><input type=\"radio\" name=\"vote\" value=\"choice2\" \/>Top 11-15<\/label><label><input type=\"radio\" name=\"vote\" value=\"choice3\" \/>Top 16 or worse<\/label>SUBMIT VOTE\u00a0vote to see results<\/form>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He pushed a team we all assumed would\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/2013\/12\/13\/a-to-z-2014-draft-tanking-boston-celtics-milwaukee-bucks-phoenix-suns\/4015187\/\">tank<\/a>\u00a0into a tightly contested Western Conference playoff race. He's scoring with efficiency that's typically only attached to names like James or Durant. He has a top-20 assist average (17th) despite sharing the backcourt with another point guard for half the season.<\/p>\n<p>A playoff berth would be the next notch on his belt. His Suns are currently sitting 1.5 games clear of the ninth-seeded\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/memphis-grizzlies\">Memphis Grizzlies<\/a>. Securing that spot would make it even harder to ignore what he's doing.<\/p>\n<p>What lies beyond that? One more season of valuable production ($7.5 million) and then a major decision to make with a $7.5 million player option for 2015-16.<\/p>\n<p>He's outperforming that salary by a considerable margin for now, but he is closing on his 28th birthday pretty quickly.\u00a0Flying under the radar for a few seasons has made this breakout more impressive, but it also hasn't left much room left for his ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, I don't see him being the one unseating CP3 from his point guard throne.<\/p>\n<p>As for that deep group behind him, though, that's a membership card Dragic is already carrying.<\/p>\n<p>If that isn't enough to get our respect, I don't know what would be. Not that it will matter to him.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, he doesn't need our approval to find success on his own.
