LAS – Imagine if the Knicks had been smarter over the final 30 seconds in Houston. They would be headed home undefeated in Texas as well as the New Year.<\/p>\n

But one J.R. Smith mental lapse – with a little help from Beno Udrih according to Mike Woodson – doesn't minimize what the Knicks accomplished over the last four days. Sunday's 92-80 over the Mavs game the Knicks two victories over teams with winning records as Mike Woodson's club makes a slow climb back to respectability.<\/p>\n

Despite losing Tyson Chandler to illness after just five minutes, the Knicks were the more dominant team at both ends while exposing the Mavs as both undersized and limited talent-wise.<\/p>\n

Carmelo Anthony scored just four of his 19 in the second half but found support from his teammates. Kenyon Martin, who replaced Chandler, scored 14 on 7-for-8 shooting and added six rebounds. Andrea Bargnani added 14 and Amar'e Stoudemire 11 before the veteran forward appeared to injure his right leg late in the fourth quarter. Iman Shumpert scored just nine points but seven came in the final 90 seconds to end any threat of a Dallas comeback.<\/p>\n

Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs with 18 points on 11 shots. Vince Carter and Monta Ellis each scored 13 and Jose Calderon 12. The Knicks improved to 11-22 while Dallas fell to 19-15.<\/p>\n

The Knicks lost Chandler to an upper respiratory infection after just five minutes. Chandler received a nice ovation during introductions for his role on the Mavs' lone title in 2011.<\/p>\n

These Mavs, however, are lights years from being a contending them. They were thoroughly outclassed by the Knicks, who led 52-35 at halftime. Anthony scored 15 of their first 29 points as the Knicks played with more energy and focus, which isn't always the case.<\/p>\n

Dallas missed all eight 3-point attempts in the half and missed eight of 17 free throws. Nowitzki, a career 92 percent free throw shooter, missed four of nine. The big German's frustration boiled over late in the second half after the Knicks kept running a plays and scoring at will. Nowitzki finally turned to the Dallas coaching staff and screamed "what the (bleep) are we doing?"<\/p>\n

The Knicks were playing free and easy but that changed in the third quarter when Dallas finally played with more resolve and passion on the defensive end. Kenyon Martin, who scored 10 third quarter points, gave the Knicks 58-39 lead with a put back dunk with 9:31 left in the period.<\/p>\n

Dallas, however, rallied to with 67-57 by the end of the quarter and Nowitzki's jumper to start the fourth made it an eight-point game. Moments later, a Vince Carter three had the Mavs to within six before Smith and Toure' Murry scored on back-to-back possessions.<\/p>\n

The Mavs came up empty on three straight trips and the Knicks pushed the lead back to 13 when Tim Hardaway Jr. scored over Carter as he was fouled. After Nowitzki answered with a rainbow jumper, Hardaway stuck a corner three and the lead was 78-64.<\/p>\n

Calderon's three cut the lead to 82-76 with 2:42 remaining and Ellis had a chance to make it a one possession game but his open three rimmed out. Dallas was running an extra defender at Anthony and with the Knicks desperate for a basket, Shumpert drove around Nowitzki and converted a reverse lay-up with 1:37 left.<\/p>\n

ALLAS \u2014 The Knicks entered Texas a train wreck. They will leave the Lone Star State bagging their season\u2019s two biggest wins and come home with one newly resuscitated player in Iman Shumpert.<\/p>\n

For all their off-court finger-pointing after the Houston heartbreaker, they didn\u2019t carry any of it onto the court in Dallas and the Knicks wound up just one 3-pointer from J.R. Smith away from sweeping the Texas Triangle.<\/p>\n

Instead, the Knicks went 2-1 after their big victory in Dallas as the Iman Shumpert Texas Revival tour arrived late, but right on time to save the Knicks in a 92-80 victory as they were poised to blow a 14-point fourth-quarter lead.<\/p>\n

In 14 tries, it was only the fifth time the Knicks have posted a winning record on the trip which also included a win over the Spurs in San Antonio.<\/p>\n

With the Knicks going cold and Carmelo Anthony not in rhythm since the first quarter, Shumpert entered late in the fourth quarter after Amar\u2019e Stoudemire hurt his hip. With Anthony double- and triple-teamed, Shumpert scored the two biggest baskets after Dallas had cut the Knicks\u2019 lead to six \u2014 a reverse layup and 3-pointer that drove the lead back to nine points with 1:13 left.<\/p>\n

After storming San Antonio and Houston with 27 and 26 points, respectively, Shumpert saved his best for last and wound up with nine points. Anthony had 19 points on 6-of-16 shooting as five Knicks hit double figures.<\/p>\n

The Knicks took a commanding 52-35 halftime lead, even with Tyson Chandler leaving the game for good in the first quarter with an upper respiratory infection.<\/p>\n

Anthony had five field goals in the first quarter but none in the second and third periods as Mavericks paid closer attention.<\/p>\n

Dallas native Kenyon Martin, after taking the night off in Houston, was a huge energy piece off the bench and scored 14 points on 7 of 8 from the field.<\/p>\n

The Knicks also got a boost from Tim Hardaway Jr. (10 points) in the second half. He raced up from the backcourt, made a runner in the lane and drew the foul. After three free throws, the Knicks led 74-62 with 8:46 left.<\/p>\n

Hardaway drained 3-pointer putting the Knicks up 78-64 with 7:45 left.<\/p>\n

Hardaway was yanked with 6:10 left for Anthony as Smith stayed in the game. Stoudemire twisted his right hip with 3:00 left and came out. Jose Calderon\u2019s 3-pointer brought the Mavs within 82-76 with 2:17 left.<\/p>\n

Shumpert came in when Stoudemire went out and scored a huge basket to break their freeze, dribbling down the right baseline for a reverse layup with 1:37 left to make it 84-76 with 1:37 left.<\/p>\n

The Mavericks looked lethargic in shooting 36.1 percent and getting out-rebounded 28-19.<\/p>\n
