During college Richards began\u00a0dressing as a woman<\/a>, which at the time was considered to be a perversion, and transsexualism was classified as a form of insanity.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Richards named the female alter ego\u00a0Ren\u00e9e<\/i>, which is French for reborn.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0This struggle with sexual identity created sexual confusion, depression, and suicidal tendencies.[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Richards began seeing Dr. Charles Ihlenfeld, disciple of\u00a0Harry Benjamin<\/a>\u00a0who specialized in endocrinology, transsexualism, and sexual reassignment.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Upon seeing Dr. Ihlenfeld she began getting hormone injections with the long-term hope for a life change.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In the mid-1960s she traveled in Europe dressed as a woman, intending to go to North Africa to see\u00a0Georges Burou<\/a>, a famous\u00a0gynecological<\/a>\u00a0surgeon at Clinique Parc in\u00a0Casablanca<\/a>,\u00a0Morocco<\/a>, regarding\u00a0sex reassignment surgery<\/a>; however, she ultimately decided against it and returned to New York.[3]<\/strong><\/a><\/sup>Richards married model Barbara Mole in June 1970, and together they had a son Nicholas in 1972. They were divorced in 1975<\/strong>.[3]<\/a><\/sup>[11]<\/a><\/sup>[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In the early 1970s, Richards resolved to undergo sex reassignment and was referred to surgeon Roberto C. Granato, Sr., by\u00a0Harry Benjamin<\/a>, successfully transitioning in 1975.[3]<\/a><\/sup>[13]<\/a><\/sup>[14]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0After surgery, Richards went to\u00a0Newport Beach,California<\/a>, and started working as an ophthalmologist in practice with another doctor<\/span><\/p>\n
